The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus wishes to advise that the threat of strike action by the academic, senior administrative and professional staff, represented by the West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) Jamaica, has been withdrawn at this time.

This follows a meeting that was held on January 4, 2024, with representatives of the  University’s Senior Management team, The Minister of Finance and the Public Service (MoFPS), the Honourable Dr. Nigel Clarke, Minister of Education and Youth (MoYE), the Honourable Fayval Williams and the three Unions representing UWI staff, i.e., UAWU, MONATS and WIGUT Jamaica.

A mechanism was put in place to work out an interim salary adjustment to be presented to the Minister of Finance and the Public Service by the end of January for consideration. The interim salary adjustment will subsist until a comprehensive salary review is completed.

The UWI Mona acknowledges the importance of addressing the concerns raised by its valued faculty and staff members and is committed to fostering dialogue towards sustainable solutions seeking an amicable resolution.

Professor Densil A.
