The UWI Annual Carol Service December 2019 with the University Singers

The University Chapel’s Annual Carol Service will take place on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 7:00 pm at the University Chapel, The UWI, Mona. Themed The Festival of Nine Lessons with Carols, The Mona campus will be hosting a face-to-face Carol Service for the community and general public. The organizers are inviting anyone who is unable to make it in person to join the festival on YouTube as the service will also be streamed live on The UWI Mona Media YouTube Channel.

This year’s highly anticipated University Chapel Annual Carol Service will be a special celebration honoring the 75th anniversary of The University of the West Indies. This year-long recognition of The UWI’s anniversary is themed “Rooted. Ready. Rising.” - recognizing 75 years of leadership, service and commitment to the region.
This carol service, a cherished tradition known as The Festival of Nine Lessons with Carols, has been a fixture on Kingstonians’ calendars since the 1970s. The service features nine Bible readings related to the coming of the Messiah and enchanting renditions of beloved Christmas carols. It symbolizes The UWI Mona's dedication to giving back to the community, welcoming everyone free of charge.

This year’s Carol Service will showcase performances by the Peter Ashbourne led UWI Classical & Jazz Ensemble. Solo performances will be delivered by Ms. Ranice Barrett (Soprano), Mr. Christopher Whyte (Tenor), and Ms. Anchele Biroo (Alto) from The University Singers. The service's organist will be Mr. Archie Dunkley.
Under the direction of Franklin Halliburton, the University Singers will serve as the resident choir, presenting works by notable composers such as George Frederic Handel, Camp Kirkland, Tom Fettke, and the late Noel Dexter.

Emphasizing the significance of preserving the Carol Service tradition in Kingston, Mr. Sean Stephens, event organizer of the Annual Carol Service, said this event remains a cornerstone for both current and former UWI community members, fostering joy, happiness, and seasonal festivities.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Mr. Stephens added,” This year's Carol Service, marking the University's 75th Anniversary, promises to be spectacular. It holds something truly special in celebration of this milestone. All are invited to join this joyous occasion at the University Chapel, UWI, Mona, and celebrate 75 years of The UWI’s remarkable journey."
