The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. James (Jimmy) Moss-Solomon, former Executive in Residence at the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM).

Mr. Moss-Solomon was a business stalwart, whose positive impact has been felt by numerous organisations across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. It is for his trailblazing contribution to business leadership that he was conferred with the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) by the Government of Jamaica in 2012.

In a statement on his passing, Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles said, “The transition of the quintessential triad of a man, James ‘Jimmy’ Moss-Solomon, gives us pause to reflect upon the main challenges facing Caribbean citizenry in this trying present. Known for his outstanding triangular contribution to industry, academia, and public advocacy, his energy and ideas touched every aspect of the development agenda of post-colonialism. His contribution to The UWI Mona School of Business, and the University Hospital of the West Indies, cannot be measured in terms of time allotted, but in the impact of his committed consciousness that insisted upon fairness, positive change, and the fellowship of the democratic collegial culture that is a part of academia. Blessings upon his saved soul and condolences to his family and friends from the UWI community.

In his reflection upon Jimmy’s transition, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus, Professor Dale Webber said, “Even as we celebrate the life and work of this region-builder, we know a great void has been created in the business community. Fortunately, Jimmy was a mentor to many including me and so his wisdom will continue to influence the business and academic community for years to come. He was the epitome of a gentleman and a scholar, never too busy to offer advice and always willing to listen and give a helping hand, whether through his network or resources, to those who had the pleasure of meeting him. He was one of the great business leaders of our generation and we were blessed to have him at the Mona School of Business and Management.”

Reflecting on a lifetime of knowing Jimmy, Dr David McBean, Executive Director, MSBM shares; “I first met Jimmy almost 30 years ago, and he always remained the same – a highly accomplished and down-to-earth person, who gave freely of his time and resources.  He would later be a source of strength as an Executive in Residence at MSBM where he provided me with valuable counsel and support.  Jimmy seemed to be everybody’s friend and mentor, and no problem was too big or small for him to assist with.  He loved his country immensely, and we would often speak of how the MSBM could evolve to be of even greater support to Jamaica and the wider Caribbean region.  He was a raconteur, a bold and generous spirit, a nation builder and a free thinker.  We thank the GraceKennedy Group for providing us with Jimmy.  I shall miss him greatly.”

His devotion to seeing people grow and achieve their dreams is that kindred spirit which sets Jimmy as an example that others should aspire to follow,” is how Professor Densil Williams, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the UWI Five Islands Campus, and former Executive Director of MSBM remembers him.

The entire UWI family will continue to celebrate Jimmy’s life and legacy by committing to use our gifts and talents to serve others, to mentor, to care for the vulnerable and to serve our Country.
