SECURITY ADVISORY: Resumption of the Issuing of Vehicle Gate Passes

Dear Members of The UWI Mona Community,

Effective Monday, April 11, 2022, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus commenced the issuing of vehicle gate passes to motorists accessing the campus. The passes are being issued as a means to mitigate motor vehicle theft which has been on the increase in the Corporate Area.

The passes will be sanitized before being re-issued to minimize the risk of any contamination.

Experts link Climate and Reparatory Justice

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) in collaboration with the Open Society University Network (OSUN) recently hosted a webinar on the Caribbean’s need for climate justice. The virtual engagement held on March 30 was part of Open Society’s Global Teach-In series. Championing a grassroots effort, the initiative designated the date for universities and organisations worldwide to lead events focused on ambitious but feasible, region-specific solutions to help Solve Climate by 2030.

Congratulations to Noel Ellis, winner of the men's 5.5K Sagicor Sigma Run.

Noel is a current UWI Mona student in the Faculty of Science and Technology. As a first year student – he has achieved straight As in the first semester of studies at The UWI, while maintaining his passion for the long-distance races and commitment to strengthening his output at the 5000M.

This proud Campion College graduate was also the bronze medal winner for the 5000M at the 2021 ISSA Grace Kennedy Boys & Girls Championship.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have been ‘walking the talk’ on several blue economy-related initiatives since the two entities joined forces in 2019 to drive climate change solutions for the Caribbean.

The Canada Caribbean Institute (CCI) congratulates the Governments of Canada and CARICOM Member States for their recent efforts to advance mutual relations and development.  The April 1 meeting of Foreign Ministers saw a discussion focused on strengthened collaboration on security, multilateral cooperation, and building a sustainable #COVID19 recovery.  The Ministers also called for the establishment of a joint commission to serve as a permanent mechanism that will formally deepen the partnership while advancing collaboration and cooperation.

The UWI Mona to resume face-to-face learning modality and accommodation on all Halls of Residence

In light of the Government of Jamaica’s announcement to resume face-to-face modality across the education sector, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus, will begin offering current and incoming students of The UWI, Mona Campus, face-to-face classes in the 2022-2023 Academic Year.

New UN climate change report identifies urgent need for capacity building and adaptation strategies in small islands.

In February, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its latest global report. Better known as the Sixth Assessment Report of Working Group II (AR6-WG2), it reveals the impacts, vulnerabilities and risks of climate change, and focuses—more than previous reports—on adaptation solutions for human societies.

Among the 270 authors selected from 1037 top climate scientists around the globe nominated to contribute to the AR6-WG2 Report, three were experts from The University of the West Indies (The UWI).
