The University of the West Indies (The UWI) celebrates its rich Caribbean legacy and continued evolution as an independent university, as it takes one step closer to a complete break from colonial ties.

The institution’s 2024 graduation ceremonies will include the unveiling of a new collection of academic regalia (gowns), significantly redesigned for the first time in seven and a half decades.

Schools of Education Announce Winner of the Blended Learning Challenge (BLC)

The School of Education, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus, is delighted to announce the winners of the Schools of Education Biennial Conference Blended Learning Challenge. The Conference was hosted on July 8-10, 2024 under the theme, "Revolutionizing Caribbean Education: Cultivating Critical Competences in a Shifting Landscape."

The winners of the Challenge were Dr. Mia Armour Jules of the Cave Hill Campus in the Strong Blend Category and Dr. Raona Williams, the Runner-Up, from R.E.F.I.T. Consulting, UK in the Strong Blend Category.

Statement on the Passing of Sir Keith Hunte

The following statement is issued by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies

(The UWI), in tribute to Sir Keith Hunte, the second Principal of The UWI Cave Hill Campus who passed away on Thursday, October 3 at age 87.

Professor Canute Thompson appointed UWI’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Board of Undergraduate Studies

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce Professor Canute Thompson’s appointment as Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Board of Undergraduate Studies. Effective October 1, 2024, he will take the helm of the Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies (OBUS).

In this new role, Professor Thompson has responsibility for driving policy development and implementation for quality assurance and regionalism across all undergraduate and sub-degree programming at The UWI and its regional and global affiliates.

UWI Names 13 Honourees for 2024 Graduation Ceremonies

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) continues its annual tradition of honouring the sterling contributions of a select group of the region’s notable luminaries. The University Council approved the conferral of 13 honorary degrees at the 2024 graduation ceremonies across The UWI’s five campuses. This year’s honorary graduands have had long and impactful careers in the areas of advocacy and activism, medicine, tourism and culture, sport, business, education, science and the music industry.

On September 5, 2024, the Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival (BCLF) honoured the Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles. The prestigious award was presented by New York Major, Eric Adams who praised Professor Sir Hilary Beckles for his “outstanding contributions to the dynamic cultural landscape through his accomplishments as an author, educator, and historian.”

Mr. Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, paid a courtesy visit to The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 9 a.m. Mr. Diop and his delegation were on a two-day visit to Jamaica (September 2-4).

Professor Michael Taylor calls for 'BOOST' to be a National Programme

The Building Out Our STEM Teachers (BOOST) Programme, an initiative dedicated to advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education throughout Jamaica has had a remarkable impact on STEM education in Jamaica. So much so that Professor Michael Taylor, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies has called for it to be a national Programme.

The UWI Mona invests more than JMD$168m in student accommodation experience

As part of a phased campus-wide renovation project to improve the teaching and learning experience of its students, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus, made a significant investment to renovate living facilities at two of its Halls of Residence—Rex Nettleford Hall and AZ Preston Hall—during the summer break. The other five (5) UWI Mona-managed Halls are also scheduled for renovation during the 2024/2025 Academic Year.
