ADVISORY | Campus Closure due to Tropical Storm Grace

TO: MEMBERS OF THE UWI MONA COMMUNITY

The UWI Mona Campus will be closed today August 17, 2021 at 12 noon due to adverse weather conditions associated with  the passing of Tropical Storm Grace over Jamaica. We wish to advise all members of the Campus Community to exit  the campus via the Irvine Hall or Hospital gates and take every precaution on the roads as you travel home.

Please avoid the Mona Road as it is currently impassable.

We also ask that you stay tuned to RJR and monitor your emails if you have access, for updates on the reopening of the Mona  Campus.

The UWI announces 2021 graduation ceremonies and honorary degrees

For their outstanding contributions to regional and international development, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will present honorary degrees to 14 eminent persons at its 2021 graduation ceremonies.

Nominations from across The UWI’s five campuses were approved by the University Council, at its sitting on April 30, 2021. These 2021 graduands will join a list of over 450 honorary degree recipients conferred by the regional University since 1965.

On August 9, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis Full Report, Summary for Policymakers (SPM) and the Technical Summary.

This Working Group I report is the first instalment of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) — series of global assessments of climate change and its impacts—which will be completed in 2022. It covers the latest scientific knowledge, painting a stark picture of climate change to date and what is to come.

Four medals from honorary grad, current and former students

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is sharing in the Caribbean’s celebration of Olympic glory. UWI current students, alumni, coaches and sports medical support staff were among the Caribbean contingent at the Tokyo Games, including four athletes who collectively won two gold medals, one silver and two bronze. The UWI community proudly congratulates all the athletes and staff who represented both their countries, and the regional university by extension.

UWI Grad Wins Olympic Gold

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) congratulates alumnus, Hansle Parchment on winning gold in the men’s 110 metre hurdles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Parchment clocked 13.05 seconds in the athletics event on August 5 to take the Olympic title. The UWI, Mona Campus alumnus now has two Olympic medals, following his bronze win at the London 2012 Olympics. He is also a silver medalist from the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.

The University of the West Indies Centre for Disability Studies (UWICDS) and Office of CARICOM Special Rapporteur on Disability, with support from the Commonwealth Secretariat, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Digicel Foundation recently completed its first ever regional Special Ministerial Conference for Specific Legislation for Persons with Disabilities in the Caribbean.
