SUNY-UWI Health Research Consortium Strengthens International Collaboration in Health Research and Innovation

Regional and international researchers, health care professionals, academics, and development partners gathered at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies for the SUNY-UWI Health Research Consortium Hybrid Meeting held from May 14–15, 2026. The conference reinforced growing partnerships between Caribbean and international institutions focused on advancing health research, innovation, climate resilience, and public health solutions.

Students of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of the West Indies, Mona, will put their final year capstone projects on show, at the annual Mona Engineering Projects Expo under the theme “Shaping the Future and Energizing Progress through Innovation and Technology,” on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

The UWI, Mona, joins Jamaica and the wider Caribbean in mourning the passing of Mr Dennis Lalor, OJ.  The iconic business leader and philanthropist, who founded the Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI) Group Limited and served as chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) for several decades, passed away last Wednesday at the age of 91 after a period of illness.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has appointed Dr Ramona Biholar to the UN Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development. Dr. Biholar serves as Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean (Graduate Studies and Research) in the Faculty of Law at The UWI Mona Campus.

SCR Club Partners with CCOD to Drive Structured Philanthropy and  Hurricane Relief Efforts at The UWI Mon

The Senior Common Room (SCR) Club has formalised a strategic partnership with the UWI Centre for Community Outreach and Development (CCOD), establishing a permanent conduit for the university’s social hub to channel philanthropic efforts.

On Friday, March 17, 2026, a delegation from the SCR Club officially handed over relief supplies to CCOD management. These items were procured following “Club Connection”- a fundraising event held last December specifically to bolster the Hurricane Melissa Relief effort.

In a November 2025 reflection, UWI Emeritus Professor and Jamaica Chapter Principal Director of Transparency International, Trevor Munroe, praised Dr the Hon Ralph Gonsalves as a transformational statesman, saying, “geniuses like Gonsalves come only once in a lifetime.” Munroe highlighted Gonsalves’ visionary support for higher education and its impact on national development, noting that he pulled St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) from being the third-poorest CARICOM country to 76 on the human development index.
