Arrangements for Teaching and Assessments at the Western Jamaica Campus

We are aware that apart from the damages to the physical infrastructure at the Mona – Western Jamaica Campus, there is currently no electricity, water and internet services. We are also aware that this is the reality throughout many communities in Western Jamaica. Given the extent of the impact of the hurricane on utility services, this situation is likely to subsist into the immediate future. Consequently, it will not be possible to conduct teaching and learning activities in any format.

Changes to the Teaching and Assessment Schedule For Semester One 2025-2026

As we proceed with teaching and learning activities, it is important to note that there have been several interruptions to the semester, resulting in quite a few teaching and learning days being lost. In response, the UWI-Mona has made the following adjustments to the teaching and assessment schedule for Semester One 2025-2026:

Reminder of UWI-Mona Reopening – November 3, 2025

As we draw closer to reopening on Monday, November 3rd, and further to our advisory of October 29th, we are aware that some members of our community may have challenges to engage face-to-face. We therefore want to use this opportunity to reiterate and reassure affected students that lecturers will post their course material on the learning management system for you to consume when able.

Update on Operations at the UWI-Mona – October 29, 2025

Further to our advisory of Sunday, October 26th, the Management of the Campus met today following a preliminary assessment of the impact of Hurricane Melissa. Following this assessment, we now advise the Campus Community that all operations of the Mona Campus will be suspended for the rest of this week, including teaching and learning activities, and assessments.

Effective 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, October 23, 2025, The UWI, Mona Campus will pivot to full online operations due to Tropical Storm Melissa.

The One Stop Graduation Photo Centre will close at 2 pm today until further notice.

The UWI Mona Campus Pivots to Full Online Operations

The Management of the Campus met this morning to assess the situation with respect to the approaching
tropical storm. The island is now under a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch. Against this
background, effective 2pm today, the Campus will pivot to full online operations.

Consequently, we are asking our Jamaican students on our halls of residence to immediately begin
vacating the halls, given that physical operations on the Campus will be suspended. Regional and
International students will remain on hall.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Nursing students at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona have received 40 new laptops from the Richard and Diana Stewart Foundation to assist with their academic journey.

The handing-over ceremony took place at the Faculty of Medical Sciences on Monday.

Head of the Richard and Diana Foundation, Diana Stewart, commended the students for their dedication and service, describing them as “quiet heroes in moments of crisis”.
