Music (BA)
Programme Overview
The University of the West Indies, Mona, in association with the Edna Manley College offers a BA Degree with a Major or Special in any of the Visual or Performing Arts disciplines offered by the College. The degree runs for three (3) years and students attend classes on the campuses of both institutions.
Programme Objectives
To train the already native theatrical talents of the Caribbean people and to direct them into an art form whilst also providing opportunities for developing talent in performance. We also aim to train teachers who are sensitive to the developing artist, in a developing nation.
Admission Requirements
Candidates must meet the academic entry requirements set by the University as
well as the Edna Manley College.
- Minimum of five (5) subjects at CXC General / GCE O’Level.
- Compulsory - English Language
- Strongly Recommended - Geography, a Foreign Language, Mathematics, History, Literature
- Advisable - In the absence of Mathematics a Laboratory Science Subject
- Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) / GCE A’Level / Other Requirements
Passes in at lest two 2-unit CAPE courses or two GCE Advanced Level subjects, one of which must be an Arts (Humanities) subject for which courses are taught at the University.
Programme Structure
Students are required to select courses according to credit requirements laid down for the BA Degree Major or Special as set out below.
MAJORS are required to complete twelve (12) credits over each level for a total of thirty-six (36) credits.
LEVEL ONE

LEVEL TWO

Four (4) Free Electives
LEVEL THREE
Twelve (12) credits from the following:
- MU317
- MUSC3101
- MUSC3100
- MU311
- MUSC3199

Six (6) Free Electives
SPECIAL IN MUSIC
For the special in music students are required to complete eighteen (18) credits over each level for a total of fifty-four (54) credits. Students must do all the required compulsory courses for the Major in MUSIC plus SIX additional CREDITS at each level from list above.
NB. Compulsory: Three (3) Humanities non-major courses
*Students who are not exempt from the ELPT and who have not been successful in the test are required to register for FOUN1099; this reduces the number of credits which can be taken in free electives at level 1.
