Special in Languages & Linguistics (BA)

Programme Overview

Foreign Language study is naturally allied to the field of Linguistics. The Special in Languages and Linguistics is intended to produce graduates who can work in international organisations and global contexts with the advantage of knowledge of one or more Modern and/or Caribbean vernacular languages, as well as their contexts of use and communicative value. The programme is a combination of Modern Langauges, Caribbean Languages such as English, Haitian Creole, Jamaican Creole and Caribbean Sign Language, with Linguistics courses in teh structure of Language (Phonology and Syntax, up to the advanced level).

Admission Requirements

Three Years Full-Time

  1. Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level / BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) including English Language AND two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 GCE A-Level subjects (one of which must be a Humanities subject for which courLaught at the University).
  2. Strongly recommended that the student has a Foreign Language. Individuals without a Foreign Language

 

Four Years Part-Time

  1. Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) including English Language.
  2. Strongly recommended that the student has a Foreign Language. Individuals without a Foreign Language pass, at least at CXC CSEC, will be required to take a least one of the basic foreign languages courses.

Programme Structure

The Special in Langauges and Linguistics requires a minimum of sixty-six (66) credits.

A minimum of nine (9) and a maximum of fifteen (15) credits in Language course from among the follow:

Faculty Requirements:

*Students who are not exempt from the ELPT and who have not been successful in the test should register for FOUN1019; this reduces the number of credits which can be taken in Free Electives at Level 1.

**Additional Level 2 credits can substitute for up to six (6) credits in Year 3. This means that students who wish to take additional Level 2 credits can do so in their final year.
