Although he has transformed many lives as an administrator and saved countless others as a surgeon, Professor Archibald McDonald is neither satisfied with nor distracted by the accolades and achievements bestowed on him throughout his career.

He still sees himself as a member of Jamaica’s working class, who rose from humble beginnings in rural St Andrew to a top post in UWI, the Caribbean’s most respected tertiary institution.

One researcher at The University Of The West Indies (UWI), Mona is calling for the government and other stakeholders to train midwives across Jamaica to assist pregnant women who are victims of domestic violence.

Cooking up a storm from cooking oil

UWI researchers make personal care products from waste cooking oil

A group of researchers from the faculty of Science and Technology at UWI, Mona have used waste cooking oil to produced personal care products such as hand sanitizers, liquid soap and soap bars.

The products will be on display at the University’s Research Days event from February 7-9.  They are the end result of research led by Dr. Michael Coley and Ms. Denis Campbell who explored useful ways to dispose of waste cooking oil which is often sends up blocking drains or clogging sewer systems.

OVERVIEW: Research has shown that the discharge of pollutants in Jamaica’s surrounding waters has created an increasingly serious risk to marine life and our environment, for which solutions must be found. The lecture will focus on mangrove, coral reef and sea grass ecosystem restoration efforts in Jamaica under the threat of the plastic pollution problem in our coastal areas
