Automated action recognition is difficult because of the large number of possible meanings of data in video streams.

Many current approaches,train systems to look for specific actions. Those approaches are challenged when previously unseen actions are recognized, and often return inaccurate results if there are between actions from different classes in the training set.

Background

Fish is an essential and traditional element in the diet of most Caribbean people. However it also contains methylmercury which can have severe effects on fetal neurodevelopment. The objective of this study was to assess the fish intake of a selected group of pregnant women from Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago and evaluate prenatal mercury exposure, using the placenta as a biomarker.

Minerals and Radioactive nuclides exist naturally in the environment and some are created by human activities. They are then absorbed by food where they can affect human health. Therefore it is essential to determine the concentration of radioactive elements and minerals in the food. Methods

“You cannot cure it, just control it”: Jamaican Adolescents Living with Diabetes

Although adolescence is a difficult time for diabetes management, there is little published qualitative research on adolescent Jamaicans with diabetes. This study investigates the experiences of Jamaican adolescents with diabetes to determine how to address their needs.

Nineteen adolescents participated in four focus groups and drew pictures representing their experiences. Thematic analysis was used to analyse their narratives; their drawings were analysed by adapting Lauritsen and Mathiasen’s (2003) method.

Respectful Maternity Care: The Other “R” Word in Maternity Service

Background

Human rights violation such as poor treatment of pregnant women is increasingly seen as a threat to the 2030 maternal health and gender goals for low and middle-income countries. Disrespect and abuse (D&A) is a component of poor treatment meted out to women during childbirth. The study has identified the prevalence of D&A during childbirth; examined the mothers’ perception of their care during childbirth. The project was funded by the UWI Principal’s New Initiative Fund.
