Investigating the Effects of Building Materials on Wireless Signal Coverage

With the increasing development of infrastructure and information and communication technologies (ICTs), there is an increased dependency on wireless technologies in a variety of user environments. The users of wireless networks are always concerned about the performance of such networks, which is dependent on both the network design as well as environmental conditions.

The comparison of the vegetative growth period of Cannabis cultivars using 18/6 photoperiod in Jamaica

Geographic isolation coupled with human selection of Cannabis sativa has given rise to the subspecies Cannabis sativa subspecies sativa and Cannabis sativa subspecies Indica. Modern day plant breeders have crosspollinated the two subspecies sativa and indica that are known as Cannabis hybrids. The therapeutic and medical value of these subspecies are distinct in their applications for the medical cannabis user.

Evaluation of Magnetic Field Strength Values Induced by Power Lines in Kingston, Jamaica

In power grids, electricity is transmitted from power plants to substations, residential, and commercial facilities over power lines, which mainly run above ground. The electrical current that passes through power lines induces magnetic fields, which can then induce currents in nearby conductors. As the human body is a conductor of electricity, induced currents can excite human tissues. This may result in increased temperature, cancers, childhood leukemia, and nervous system disturbances, especially with prolonged exposure.

Evaluating Discovery Bay Water Quality to Improve Capacity for Environmental Management

The Discovery Bay Special Fishery Conservation Area (Figure 1) is demonstrating anincrease in the abundance of fishes. Its environs however,remain smothered by macroalgae which are presumed to be due to eutrophication and relatively low herbivory rates. Both shoreline sources and up-wellings bring pollutants into the Bay.

Red mud doped lead-free radiation shielding glasses

Abstract:

Glasses in the range 50Bi2O3-30B2O3-(20-x)BaO-xRedmud, x = 0.1 to 0.5 wt.%, were synthesized and characterized for use as low melting point radiation shield glass solder using a combination of spectroscopic, thermal analysis and MCNP(X) simulation. The MCNP(X) simulation was used to determine the Gamma-ray half value layer (HVL) for several photon energies.

Pollination Ecology of Pimenta dioica (L.) (Merr.)

Introduction

Pimento (Pimenta dioica) is an economically valuable tree yielding ‘allspice’, leaf and berry essential oils, an indispensable part of Caribbean and global cuisines. Under threat locally, this study of its floral biology identifies and confirms functional dioecy –male and female flowers borne on separate individual trees (which appear isophenotypical).

The leaves of Cissus sicyoides have been utilized in traditional medicine. The berries however are underutilized and do not appear to be widely consumed. This study was undertaken to evaluate the antioxidant properties of C. sicyoides berries.

Biochemical properties of tree ripened and post harvest ripened Mangifera indica (cv. East Indian)

Mangifera indica (cv. East Indian) is a premium mango in the Tropics attracting high market value. The fruits are normally harvested prior to attaining full maturity and allowed to ripen post harvest. This study was undertaken to evaluate the biochemical properties of tree ripened versus post harvest ripened mangoes.
