Dr. Carmel Roofe is a Professor of Curriculum Studies in the School of Education, at The University of the West Indies, Mona. She currently serves as the Director of the School of Education. She holds a PhD and Master of Philosophy in Curriculum Development from the University of the West Indies, Mona, a Bachelor’s in Education from the University of Technology, Jamaica and a Diploma in Teaching from Shortwood Teachers’ College. Other administrative roles held at The UWI entail programme co-ordinator for masters and doctoral programmes in Curriculum Studies, co-ordinator of the Association for Graduate Researchers in Education (AGRE), Deputy Dean for undergraduate studies, and Deputy Dean for graduate matters within the Faculty of Humanities and Education.
Professor Roofe’s growing publication record includes five books, five special issue journal volumes, 19 peer reviewed book chapters, 39 peer-reviewed journal articles. She has delivered over 100 conference and specially invited presentations regionally and internationally. She is the recipient of The UWI’s Distinguished Teaching Award on three occasions and in 2023 was recognized for achieving perfect scores on student evaluation for the academic year 2021-2022. She also received the principal’s research award for most outstanding researcher in 2022 and 2024. Additionally, Professor Roofe is the recipient of the 2021 Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award for the book, A Cross-cultural Consideration of Teacher Leaders’ Narratives of Power, Agency and School Culture: England, Jamaica and the United States and in 2023 received the American Educational Studies Association Critics’ Choice Award for her single authored book The Lived Curriculum Experiences of Jamaican Teachers: Currere and Decolonising Intentions. Her most recent book is entitled Curriculum Implementation Leadership and Equity in Education: Curriculum Struggles and Hopes in Jamaica during the Post-independence Era, published by Routledge in 2025.
