Abstract:

While it is clearly stated that it is a guide for use in schools, there is no clear indication of the type of school it is designed for, nor the courses in which it is expected to be used. Among those who advised on the project, however, are people associated particularly with secondary education and one may assume that it is for this level that the book is intended. Tourism is a subject which is included in the Caribbean Examinations Council syllabuses for both Geography and Social Studies.
There is very little to commend this publication and the list of faults is too long for detailed discussion. At least some mention should be made, however, of the blatantly Eurocentric approach to the history of travel (p. 5), to the scant treatment of the environmental and social impact of tourism (pp. 13, 15, 45), and to the gross waste of space incurred by the layout which contributes nothing to the clarity or attractiveness of the book.
In view of the effort which the Caribbean Tourism Research and Development Centre and its two Working Groups appear to have put into Guide, and the financial backing of the Caribbean Development Bank, this book, which could not have been cheap to produce, is a great disappointment. For so much paper there is very little information. We should have had something much more concise and informative than this. Perhaps a regional committee is not the ideal body to produce a teachers' guide on tourism education.
