Abstract:

In 1983 the Jamaican Government inaugurated the Primary Text book Project, which distributed free reading books and mathematics textbooks/workbooks to all primary school children in government schools. The books were printed on newsprint at the presses of one of Jamaica's daily newspapers. Teachers, principals, parents, and students initially raised doubts about the news print texts being able to last their intended period of use of one school year. However, the complaints diminished as with time the newsprint texts survived their designated life span.
