HIV/AIDS is now rife in the Caribbean, with potential devastating effects on the population, labour force and socio-economic development of the Region. The existing research literature identifies many factors which impact on the incidence and prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean and this study complements those by proposing potential solutions to the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Region.

The evidence seems to suggest that (i) little attention has been paid to re-structuring the practical-teaching component in the Eastern Caribbean programmes over the past forty years; (ii) the duration of the exercise is apparently being reduced rather than being increased in line with current trends; and (iii) neither the notion of the co-operating teacher nor of a more developmental role for the University of the West Indies seems to be formally integrated into the practical teaching exercise.

This article examined the extent to which leadership strategies to enhance school effectiveness were employed in selected secondary schools in Jamaica. Attention was placed on leadership strategies as these relate to decision-making, instruction and the learning environment. The sample of 35 principals was selected by stratified random sampling from 14 Reclassified High, 7 Junior High and 14 All Age Schools. A questionnaire was used in the collection of data.

Affective learning has become increasingly important in the preparation of students for life. This article draws on a study that examined the delivery of Student Services, (the department that concentrates on qualitative affective social learning) in two types of tertiary level institutions - Universities and teachers' colleges - in order to ascertain the value students ascribe to affective offerings delivered by selected Student Services' units measured against the actual satisfaction students derive from accessing the offerings of these units.

The articles in this volume cover a breadth of issues concerning tertiary education, the administration of schools, the culture of the classroom and the survival of the beginning teacher and pervasive cultural values and attitudes that exacerbate rather than ameliorate critical health and social issues in the society.

Grenada: A History of Its People is a welcome addition to the bibliography of Grenada history. The most comprehensive preceding histories are The History of the Island of Grenada, 1498–1796, by Fr. Raymond Devas (1974), published 3 decades ago, and the more recent history by George Brizan (1984, reprinted 1998), Grenada, Island of Conflict. The latter history, both current and comprehensive, relies mainly on official documents and statistical data, taking a formal and conventional approach to detailing the island’s history.

Literacy acquisition and development among primary-age children is a main focus of inquiry and research for different institutions and organizations in the Caribbean. In Jamaica, educational bodies such as the School of Education, University of the West Indies, and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture (MOEYC), have implemented literacy projects like the Language Materials Workshop (LMW), the New Horizon Project, the Jamaica All-Age School Project, and UNICEF-Jamaica Literacy through Literature in Zone 40, Clarendon (Webster and Walters 1998).

Some studies of the St. Lucian language situation have reported that St. Lucians are ambivalent toward French Creole and English, two dominant varieties spoken on the island. Recent sociolinguistic surveys have reported the emergence of an English lexicon vernacular that is now widely spoken, mostly by younger generations in and around the urban centres and in rural areas as well. This paper reports the findings of a study on the attitudes of student teachers toward the three language varieties.
