Leadership Engagement and Development Sessions (LEADS)

The Leadership Engagement and Development Sessions (LEADS) program is geared towards the engagement of the Commuting Student’s Committee Members (Student Leaders).

The main objective of the program is to enable and help student leaders to succeed in both their academic and co-curricular lives. The program entails monthly sessions and continuous consultation. The portfolio also includes special events that are geared towards enhancing the wellbeing of students.

Growth and Purpose Sessions (GPS)

GPS ( Growth ana Purpose Sessions) are designed to target different areas of development for final year commuting students who wish to “zone” in on their development in a very intentional way. As such, a series of sessions are developed to focus on increasing employability, professional dress in the workplace, resume and cover letter writing and how to navigate the world of internship.

Students who participate in GPS will develop academic knowledge and career management skills to be successful, become aware of their competencies, develop or enhance employability competencies.

GPS will help Commuting Students to:

1. Enhance awareness of their academic knowledge/competencies.

2. Enhance Career Management Skills to be successful in the world of work.

3. Enhance their employability and entrepreneurial skills.

4. Expose students to internship and graduate opportunities.

GPS Sessions include:

  • Job Character Development
  • Image Development
  • Resume and Cover Letter Clinics

All GPS programmes will be available to you when we resume in face-to-face mode of delivery.

Second Year Transformational Experience Programme (STEP)

STEP is designed to focus on student development and success. It will avail students with the opportunity to engage in activities that cater to their individual needs and interest.

The programme has embedded in its curriculum, faculty interactions outside of the classroom space, which will allow students to develop life skills and enhance their interpersonal skills through networking; leadership, career direction and service learning focus. With these focus areas in mind, we would have developed in our Second Year UWI, Mona Commuting Students: Academic Enrichment, Career Exploration and Co-Curricular Development.

Students who participate in STEP will be:

1. Exposed  to programmes that will assist in their development or enhancement social and professional competencies

2. Exposed to programmes which will make them reflect on self.

3. Supported by Graduate Students Facilitators

4. Exposed to opportunities which will assist in discovering career possibilities.

Step Sessions:

1. Self-Management Workshop Series

2. Vision Board/ Goal Setting Workshop Series

3. Student/ Faculty Mingle

4. Examination Prep Sessions

5. On-going Monitoring Session with STEP Facilitators

Service Learning and Civic Engagement

The Commuting Students Service Learning and Civic Engagement Programme is designed with the concept of service leads to learning.  The programme is developed with the aim of creating within students the vision to see that they can balance and link their learning with community development and involvement.

Types of service learning opportunities available to students are:

1. Working alongside non-profit organizations and on projects that will help garner knowledge and experience within the field.

2. Workshops that will help to develop knowledge and skills in leadership, advocacy and activism.

3. Group sessions that will aid volunteers in reflecting and cementing the knowledge they have gain throughout the programme.

Students who participate in the Changemakers Club will benefit from:

1. Exposure to real life challenges in society with the aim of strategy implementation for change/enhancement.

2. A greater sense of appreciation for social responsibility.

3. A greater sense of value for their academic pursuit, value of self and their relevance to community development or enhancement.

4. The development of key  competencies such as emotional awareness, problem solving etc.

Commuting Students Service Learning Partnerships:

1. UWI affiliated organizations.

2. Non-government organizations.

All Co-Curricular Service Learning and Civic Engagement programmes will be available to you when we resume in face-to-face mode of delivery.
