The Sir Arthur Lewis Centennial Conference held in St. Lucia from January 14-16, 2015

Dr. Braithwaite - Paper "Technological Advancement in the Lewis Model".

Abstract

Six decades after Arthur Lewis' seminal paper, "Economic Development with Unlimited Supplies of Labour,'' his contributions remain both relevant and contentious.  This paper argues that Lewis' explicit omission of technological advancement in the capitalist sector is not an impediment to the basic thrust of his work.  In his famous paper, Lewis does discuss technological progress but places more emphasis on such progress in the subsistence sector.  This paper revisits the Lewis paper by explicitly modelling technological advancement in both sectors.    As a secondary, but related, task, this paper clarifies what constitutes the dual sectors of the economy, especially as it relates to the subsistence sector, and re-situates same to reflect the contemporary situation.
