MSc in Engineering and Management

The MSc Engineering and Management programme offers practical and theoretical knowledge of modern engineering, along with a solid grounding in management techniques and their application to the field of engineering. The 36 credit programme consist of 15 credits of core courses, 9 credits of focus engineering courses and 12 credits of electives. The electives contain a mix of management and engineering courses, or an engineering research project. The project provides an opportunity for students to matriculate into selected PhD programmes after successfully completing this MSc.

The programme is offered in collaboration with the Mona School of Business and Management and is being supported by the Faculty of Engineering, St Augustine. It is highly requested by local industry who are already attesting to the excellent abilities of BSc graduates and the need for us to offer a graduate engineering management programme.

Programme Objective

The Master of Science in Engineering and Management aims to develop future leaders of business, industry and technological sectors. By carefully blending a mixture of engineering and business courses, the programme is designed to offer an appropriate management degree for those individuals who would like to advance to managerial positions. The curriculum integrates theoretical concepts, case studies and computer software in a simulated technical and business environment where students are challenged to make decisions that have organisational wide impact.

Engineering and Management is aimed at scientists and engineers who aspire to a senior role involving technical and strategic management responsibilities, while developing advanced skills in selected areas of engineering. It is ideal for recent engineering graduates hoping to make their first move into more advanced engineering along with engineering management, or for established professional engineers who wish to make a switch into a management role and must enhance their knowledge beyond their specific technical field with a blend of management and business.

The aim of the MSc in engineering and management are:

  • To provide advanced education and training for graduates in engineering, science and related areas to meet the current and future needs of industries.
  • To provide instruction in a range of engineering, economic and managerial subjects that should enable engineers to be better able to deal with the problems that can occur on management of staff in industries
  • To improve the decision-making capabilities of engineers and other professionals in the region, with a view to improving the efficiency and effectiveness in industry.
  • To equip engineers and professionals to apply modern knowledge effectively in the real, competitive world of industry, and hence to assist the nations of the regions in their bid for modernization and development.
  • To foster the advancement of knowledge through the promotion of research into the problems and opportunities that face the engineering sector.

Courses

The courses of the MSc Engineering and Management programme comprises a total of 36 credits taken mostly from existing courses in the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) and the Faculty of Engineering, St Augustine. Five courses constitute the core requirement of 15 credits, and depending on the candidate’s first degree, 9 credits of courses are selected from a concentration or focus area within his/her discipline.

These disciplines currently matched the undergraduate programmes of the Faculty of Engineering, Mona, which have already graduated students. The final 12 credits of the programmes may be taken from a group of electives, or as a Masters Research Project. The project option is encouraged for candidates desirous of pursuing PhD in engineering.

Tuition and Requirements

Admissions

The minimum admission requirements for this programme are as follows:

  • BSc degree in biomedical, civil, computer, industrial, mechanical, electronics or electrical engineering or equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 from a recognized university, or
  • BSc degree in biomedical, civil, computer, industrial, mechanical, electronics or electrical engineering or equivalent, with a Pass degree (GPA 2.0-2.49) from a recognized university, and at least two years working experience in a relevant industry, or
  • BSc degree in physics, mathematics or computing, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 from a recognized university. Candidate may be required to do selected undergraduate courses to qualify.

It is expected that the majority of entrants to the programme will be from the following sectors:

  • Recent graduates seeking to upgrade their qualifications for work as engineering managers
  • Professionals in any field seeking to retool or upgrade their skills and qualifications
