Mission Statement

The mission of the Faculty of Engineering is to provide high quality education in engineering with emphasis on application via research and development in support of Caribbean business, industry and infrastructure, with its graduates, staff and facilities being at the forefront in propelling growth, development and innovation in the Caribbean and the world.

Faculty History

2009

On September 2009, the Engineering programme started at the University of the West Indies, Mona with just one Engineeering degree (BSc in Electronics Engineeering) being offered. Founder, Dr. Paul Aiken, started the programme in the department of Physics under the supervision and guidance of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

The overall objectives of this programme were (and still are) to produce graduates:

  • Who have a solid foundation in the core areas of Electronics Engineering.
  • Who will be technically competent for immediate employment in the fields of Telecommunications, Industrial Instrumentation and Automation.

The programme grew and after two years expanded to offer two additional degrees; BSc in Civil Engineering and BSc in Computer Systems Engineering. The programme aims to meet the challenges of an evolving society by providing a high performance engineering education that fosters personal, professional and social responsibilities, technical excellence and creativity; and effective communication, teamwork and leadership.
