The Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, Jamaica, invites you to present your work at its 27th Annual Research Conference (FMSARC 2018). We seek, in this forum, to bring together students, academics, practitioners, governmental and non-governmental stakeholders and the general public at large.
This year’s conference is marked as a signature event as the UWI celebrates 70 years of excellent service to the region.
The theme for the 2018 conference – “Violence, Trauma and Development”, guides the content of the conference workshops. However, original works submitted for presentation in the scientific sessions are not limited to this conference theme.

The FMS invites you to the inaugural Professorial lecture of Professor Eulalia Kahwa.
Topic: Strengthening Health Care Systems through capacity building for research and policy development among nurses and midwives.
Overview: Nurses and midwives are the primary point of contact within health care systems with potential for great health care innovations to improve the quality of care. This can be achieved by providing a platform for developing research and leadership capacity among nurses and midwives, fostering dynamic and sustained engagement of researchers, research users and decision makers in the policy development process and supporting the scale up of innovative programs and practices.

World Renowned Scientist Professor Robert Gallo to launch the
Global Virus Network Center in Jamaica

“Virus Epidemics: Reflections on the past and prospects for the future with emphasis on HIV/AIDS”

Professor Gallo who co-discovered HIV as the causative agent of AIDS will discuss viral epidemics of the 20th century and his personal experience with HIV, including reflections upon the past and lessons learned for the future. He will discuss the process of discovering a virus and linking the virus as the cause of a disease. Dr. Gallo will discuss the needs for combatting HIV/AIDS in the immediate future, including the development of a functional cure and the need for far greater testing and therapy as early and fast as possible to end the epidemic. He will also discuss the field of HIV vaccine development, including the Institute of Human Virology’s vaccine candidate while also sharing his thoughts on the field’s biggest challenges and the limitations facing all HIV vaccine candidates today. Dr. Gallo will share what HIV/AIDS research has accomplished for the broad field of medical research and public policy, and how we could do better. He will share why he co-founded the Global Virus Network (GVN) and the new collaboration between GVN, Jamaica and specifically the University of the West Indies.
