Chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are the focus of global healthcare talk. The Caribbean has undergone the epidemiological transition from infectious diseases to noninfectious diseases. However, unless the Caribbean region is vigilant, it might see old infectious diseases returning to prominence. There has been increase in tuberculosis with the HIV epidemic, cholera has reared its head in Haiti and Cuba and there have been malaria outbreaks in islands where malaria was previously eradicated.
