Beta-thalassaemia major patients require monthly blood transfusions. Studies on the oxidant-antioxidant indices in patients on desferrioxamine-chelation or without chelation indicate that desferrioxamine chelation does not normalize ferritin level but attenuates oxidative damage and improves total antioxidant level in these patients.

Influence of genetic diversity of merozoite surface
protein (MSP2) of Plasmodium falciparum on age and
gender was investigated in children presenting with
uncomplicated malaria at a provincial health facility
in Nigeria. No significant correlation was observed
between the MSP2 loci and parasite density on age or
gender.
The study found that pigment production was significantly
associated with multi-drug resistance, presence
of virulence-associated genes, and expression of some
important virulence factors. The authors conclude that
since pigment production is easy to determine, this
might be a good starting point to identify the virulence
status of an isolate.

This study has investigated the organization of vagal brainstem nuclei
in the agouti and has shown organisation pattern similar to those of
other commonly used laboratory animals. The larger size of this
species makes it a suitable alternative experimental animal.

450 commercial chicken eggs in Grenada was studied. The data indicate that chicken eggs used in Grenada can
harbour drug resistant E coli.

In this study, 18 patients who have had a perilunate
injury with dislocation or fracture were evaluated.
When the pathomechanics was estimated based on the
Mayfield’s criteria, 17 patients were classified into

increase in this condition with development of os

This study reports the long-term surgical outcomes of
elderly patients with humeral neck fractures who
underwent treatment using the modified Hackethal
bundle nailing method on the basis of an approximately
10-year follow-up study. This method is simple and less
invasive.
