Incidence, and Gender, Age and Ethnic Distribution of Sarcomas in the Republic of Suriname from 1980 to 2008

The incidence of soft-tissue and bone sarcomas in Suriname, as well as their gender, age, and ethnic distribution, probably do not differ substantially from international patterns. However, overall sarcomas and leiomyosarcoma may have a predilection for Afro-Surinamese rather than Asian-Surinamese.

The incidence rates of tongue and tonsillar cancers have been decreasing in Jamaica but continue to predominate among older men. This is unlike data reported elsewhere, where rates have been increasing in young adults, and therefore warrants further study.

In Jamaica, squamous cell carcinoma is the most common vulvar cancer, affecting mainly older women. Age-standardized rates for all vulvar cancers and vulvar squamous cell carcinoma are declining.

Determination of Chemical Antioxidants and Phenolic Compounds in the Brazilian Mushroom Agaricus sylvaticus

Agaricus sylvaticus mushroom has been widely studied because of its high nutritional value and medicinal properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of both alcoholic and aqueous extracts of Agaricus sylvaticus, and quantify their total polyphenol content. There is great antioxidant potential of aqueous, alcoholic and ethereal extracts of the Agaricus sylvaticus mushroom.
Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell Disease in Jamaica: A Review – Past, Present and Future

Screening newborns for sickle cell disease (SCD) in Jamaica has significantly impacted mortality and morbidity of affected children. Efforts must continue toward the goal of island-wide newborn screening for SCD in order to ensure continued improvements.

Exploring Emotional Intelligence in a Caribbean Medical School

This preliminary study examined the emotional intelligence (EI) of a sample of medical students from a Caribbean medical school. The total mean score for EI fell within the average according to accepted standards; however, males and younger age groups (< 25 years) had significantly higher scores.
Endothelial Injury Preceding Intracranial Aneurysm Formation in Rabbits

This study is the first to present endothelial cell changes of basilar artery bifurcation in response to sustained high blood flow in rabbits. Endothelial cell impairment possibly initiates aneurysm formation.

Intervertebral fusion and intervertebral disc discectomy can significantly affect the adjacent inferior intervertebral space stress. There is no obvious effect of cervical artificial disc replacement on adjacent inferior intervertebral space stress.
