Research Highlights

Rice Cultivation and the apple snail

One of the major initiatives in the drive towards agricultural self sufficiency in Jamaica is the development of rice cultivation on a major scale.

Papaya: virus-resistant varieties

Utilising both traditional and biotechnological methods for development of new virus resistant varieties for Jamaican farmers.

Improvement of post harvest practices

Through the development of appropriate production practices, careful harvesting, and proper packaging, storage, and transport.

The Life Sciences Honours Society (LSHS) seeks to recognize outstanding performance in the discipline and was created as a way of encouraging students of the Life Sciences to aim higher and achieve more. The Society’s main goal is for its members to graduate with high honours (First or Upper Second Class).

Microgrid Training Centre at the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory

The Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory (DBML), known for its expertise in coral reef biology and tropical coastal processes, has recently seen the installation and inauguration of a Microgrid Training Centre. The installation of a new 75kW Miocrogrid system with battery back-up, SCADA system and supporting infrastructure, positions DBML as the Northern Caribbean’s first Centre of Excellence for SMART grid training, research and education.
