Public Lecture: Challenges in the Jamaican Bauxite Sector
National Heritage Month Public Lecture
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Sociology and the National Heritage Committee at UWI, Mona have organized several events as part of national heritage celebrations during October. The first such event is a public lecture to be delivered by Umar Johnson, a descendant of Frederick Douglas, an American social reformer. The Lecture is entitled, “Strategic Approaches to address Racial Inequality in the Americas: Comparing the Work of Marcus Garvey to Frederick Douglasss and W.E.B.Dubois”. The event takes place on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.

UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Open Lecture
“Developing Critical Thinkers: For Today’s Global Society” is the title of the UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Open Lecture set for Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Maryellen Weimer, Distinguished Professor at Penn State University.
Her presentation is expected to expose educators to novel ways to stimulate the minds of their students to be critical thinkers in a competitive global market. The lecture targets especially lecturers, principals, teachers, human resource managers and decision makers in the corporate world to highlight learner centered teaching which can be applied in all levels of the learning process.
13th Annual Walter Rodney Lecture
The 13th annual Walter Rodney Lecture takes place under the theme, “Democracy and a New Paradigm on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. Horace Levy of the Peace Management Initiative will deliver the Lecture. The event is organized by the Institute for Caribbean Studies and Reggae Studies Unit at UWI, Mona.
