MONATS Elects Executive Council – 2005/06

At its 30th Annual General Meeting held on Thursday August 18, 2005 at the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre, members of the Mona Administrative and Technical Staff Association (MONATS) exercised their franchise and confirmed the following elected representatives to serve on the Executive Council for the year 2005-2006:

Orientation Programme for New Students

As the three-week Orientation Programme for new students at the UWI gets into its second week, students will be exposed to a gamut of exciting seminars by Deans of the Faculties, video presentations, campus tours and get-togethers. Some of the presentations include Financing Your Educations and Money Management, Interpersonal Relations (Man to Man/Woman to Woman), UWI Protocol, “Wellness – A Choice to Make: Your Health Centre and “Deportment: A Personal Responsibility”.

Sunday Morning Service at UWI Chapel resumes September 4

The Sunday Service at the UWI Chapel will resume on September 4, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. Please note that all students and staff are especially invited to attend the Welcome Service for new students and staff, which will take place on Sunday September 11 at 9:00 a.m.

University Consortium of Small Island States

The UWI will be hosting a three-day Conference for small island states universities, entitled, “University Consortium of Small Island States” (SIDS). This will be held in the Council Room on the Mona Campus from August 29-31, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Participating universities include the University of the West Indies, the University of South Pacific, the University of Mauritius, the University of Malta, and the University of the Virgin Islands.

West Indian Medical Journal now available

The current issue of the West Indian Medical Journal is now available at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona. It contains proceedings of the Ophthalmological Society of the West Indies 16th Annual Congress which was held in the Bahamas from July 6-9. Articles include Lifestyle Management, Ethics in Ophthalmology, Refractive Surgery/Cataract, Glaucoma, Surgical Ophthalmology, among many others.

Fee Payment Deadlines

The UWI Mona Campus advises all students that tuition fees for the first semester of the 2005-2006 academic year become due and payable August 29, 2005. Registration without penalty is allowed up to September 2. Late registration after September 2 is allowed up to September 9, with a late registration fee of $1000 as well as a fine of 1% on the amount of outstanding fees.

Final Call for Conference papers

The organizers of the Eighth Annual Eastern Caribbean Island Cultures Conference are issuing a final call for papers under the theme, “The Islands in Between: Language, Literature and Culture of the Eastern Caribbean.”
The Conference will take place from November 10 to 12 at the Rovanel’s Hotel, Crown Point, Tobago, and is a collaborative effort of the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras; UWI, Cave Hill Campus and the Tobago Centre, and the UWI School of Continuing Studies. Interested persons may send submissions or enquiries to islandsconference@gmail.com.

Mona Academic Conference 2005 gets underway

The UWI will again host its Mona Academic Conference from August 26 to August 28, under the theme, “Tourism: The Driver of Change in the Jamaican Economy?” Presenters will be drawn from Jamaica and the Caribbean tourism sector and include hoteliers, policy makers, academics and other experts in the field. The presentations will focus on six sub-themes. These are: Evolution of the Tourist Industry in Jamaica; Travel and Tourism Vulnerability Issues; The Value of Tourism to the Jamaican Economy; The Tourism Product: What it Is and What it Could Be and Industry Challenges

Orientation for New and Existing Academic and Administrative Staff

The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) invites new and existing members of the academic and senior administrative staff to its orientation workshop. This workshop is designed to acquaint new members of staff with the history, structure and policies of the institution within the context of higher education in the Caribbean. It will also familiarize new members of staff with the programmes, rules, procedures and services of the institution as well as encourage positive staff/student relationships.

Orientation for New Students, Parents and Spouses of New Students

Orientation for new students will take place from August 25 to September 15. Students will be exposed to various activities including video presentations, campus tours, presentations by Deans of Faculties, training in UWI protocol, deportment, health, banking and financial advice and freshers’ fetes and dinners. Orientation for parents and spouses of new students, entitled, “Great Expectations”, will take place in the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre on August 25, 8:30a.m. – 4:00 p.m..
