Applications still open for Graduate Programmes

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research is now accepting applications for entry in September 2005 for its MSc in Natural Security and Strategic Studies, MSc in Aquatic Sciences and MSC/PHd in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health. Closing date is August 15. For entry in January 2006 - MSc in Computer Sciences, MSc in Digital Technology, MA in Communication for Social and Behaviour Change and Diploma in Information Technology. The closing date for receipt of applications is August 26.

Orientation for New and Existing Academic and Administrative Staff

The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) invites new and existing members of the academic and senior administrative staff to its orientation workshop. This workshop is designed to acquaint new members of staff with the history, structure and policies of the institution within the context of higher education in the Caribbean. It will also familiarize new members of staff with the programmes, rules, procedures and services of the institution as well as encourage positive staff/student relationships.

Registration packages are ready for collection

All returning students who are Jamaican residents and medical students who have not yet collected their Registration packages are asked to do so at the Assembly Hall from August 8 - 28, 8:30 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.
Returning students residing in other contributing countries of the Caribbean are asked to collect their packages from the UWI School of Continuing Studies in their respective countries and from the Cave Hill (Barbadian residents) and St. Augustine (residents of Trinidad and Tobago) Campuses beginning August 11.

Summer Workshop on Capoeira

The Embassy of Brazil, through the Latin American-Caribbean Centre of UWI, is hosting a two-week summer capoeira workshop from August 8 - 20 at the Students’ Union Gym on the Mona Campus.
Organized for participants in the Youth Training and Empowerment Programme, the capoeira workshop will expose students to capoeira, a creative and defensive form of martial arts that is harmonized into a dance with music. Capoeira has its origins in the need of Brazilian slaves to protect themselves.

Teacher educators, Teachers to benefit from Professional Development Workshop

The Joint Board of Teacher Education and the Institute of Education is calling on all teacher educators and teachers to attend a two-day conference specially designed for their professional development.
Under the theme, “Transforming the Practicum in Teacher Education: Field Experience, Supervision and Reflection”, the Conference will be held from August 25-26 at the Hilton Kingston hotel,New Kingston.

UWI Library awarded UNESCO Award for Proposal

The UWI Library was recently awarded a UNESCO grant for its proposal entitled “Information for All Programme.”
The project was among some 24 selected from 502 applications to the UNESCO Bureau of the Intergovernmental Council for the Information For All Programme. The grant will be used to stage a four-day workshop on preservation and digitization of cultural heritage for librarians, archivists and media personnel in the Eastern Caribbean and Belize.

Forensic Interviewing of Children Workshop

As part of its contribution to equip social workers, police personnel and all who work with children affected by violence and abuse, the UWI through its Department of Sociology and Social Work, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, will be hosting a workshop on Forensic Interviewing of Children. This will be held on Thursday, August 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Department of Management Studies on the Mona Campus.

Jamaican Students Association Meeting for New Students at St. Augustine

New students who will be attending the UWI St. Augustine Campus during the 2005/2006 academic year, are invited to attend a meeting organized by the Jamaican Students Association on Sunday, August 14 beginning at 3:00 p.m..
The meeting which will address questions and concerns of new students and will take place in Room SR16, Department of Management Studies.
