CARIMAC graduates receive Jamaica Broilers Fair Play Awards
Three graduates of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), University of the West Indies, Mona, Patricia Watson, Leonardo Blair and Trudy Simpson, received first prize in the Print Media Category at the Jamaica Broilers Fair Play Awards Ceremony recently held at the Hilton Kingston hotel. The award-winning piece was a 10-part series published in the Gleaner on “Children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS”. The graduates captured the prize ahead of 15 other entrants.
Dr. Tracey Gibson awarded Master of Science in Medical Genetics
Dr. Tracey Gibson has recently rejoined the staff of the Department of Pathology, where she holds the post of Lecturer. Earlier this month, she completed a course of study at the University of Glasgow, in Scotland, where she placed first in her class, and was awarded the Master of Science degree (Medical Sciences) in Medical Genetics with distinction. This Masters course provided training in Molecular genetics, Cytogenetics, Biochemical genetics and Clinical genetics, and included both theoretical and practical work.
JADOL stages Public Lecture on Autonomous Learning
“From Sage on the Stage to Guide on the Side” is the topic of the public lecture organized by the Jamaican Association for Distance and Open Learning (JADOL) to be presented by Canadian Education and Business Consultant, Louisa Horne. The lecture addresses the cultural shift required to encourage autonomous learning on the part of students, occasioned by the increased use of information communication technologies. This will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2005, at 4:30 p.m. in the Multi-Functional Room of the Main Library on the Mona Campus.
Presentation on Canada’s International Policy Statement
The Canadian High Commission and the Department of Government will be staging a presentation on “Canada’s International Policy Statement” on October 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Graduate Lecture Theatre 3 (Sir Alister McIntyre Building). All are invited.
Study Skills Workshop continues with “Time Management”
The Study Skills Workshop being put on by the Counselling Service at the University Health Centre continues on Thursday, October 6 with the topic “Time Management” from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre in the Faculty of Humanities and Education. All interested students, academic staff and members of the public are invited to attend.
University Bookshop extends opening hours
The University Bookshop has extended its opening hours to Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as of October 1.
Condolences
The University of the West Indies regrets the passing of Major Vincent Browne who died in his native country, Monsterrat on Friday, September 16. He served as Warden at Chancellor Hall, Mona and Cave Hill, Barbados. He is the composer of the popular song, “Mona Moon”. Major Browne’s Requiem Mass will take place at the Salem Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 28. This will be followed by his funeral on Thursday, September 29 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Monsterrat. The UWI extends condolences to his widow, Dora, and other members of his family.
Falla Backa Oliver at UWI
The Institute of Caribbean Studies is hosting an evening with Oliver Samuels, dubbed “Falla backa Oliver to UWI.” This will be held on Thursday September 29 at 6:00 p.m., at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, UWI. Oliver will share highlights of his 35-year career in theatre. Guest host is Christene Hewitt, formerly of TVJ’s “Man Talk” programme. All are invited to attend. Admission is free.
Information Centre for Children Welfare
The Caribbean Child Development Centre, CCDC, at the UWI, recently negotiated an agreement with the Inter-American Children’s Institute, IIN to set up an Information Centre at the CCDC comprising databases of documents, organizations and projects related to children and families.
A specialized arm of the Organization of American States, the IIN aims to raise awareness of the problems affecting children in the Americas with the purpose of improving the health, education and general welfare of these children, young people and families.
Kingston Paediatric AIDS Programme
Professor Celia Christie, Professor of Child Health Deparment of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, and the Kingston Paediatric Aids (PAIDS) Programme, has been invited to deliver the 2nd Annual C Davenport Cook Lecture in International Child Health at Yale University. The Lecture will take place on October 5. The Lecture seeks to bring distinguished physicians, scientists and public health experts to Yale to discuss their efforts to improve the lives of children worldwide.
