Resumption of Monthly Columbian films
The Latin American-Caribbean Centre, in association with the Embassy of Colombia, will resume the monthly presentation of Colombian films for this academic year, with the viewing of "Ilona arrives with the Rain" on Friday, September 30 at 7.00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre in the Faculty of Humanities and Education. All are invited and admission is free.
Condolences
The University of the West Indies regrets the passing of Ms. Janet Sterling. Ms. Sterling served the Microbiology Department at the UWI for over 16 years and was in the process of completing a PhD in Psychology at UWII. We extend condolences to the family, friends and past colleagues of Ms. Sterling.
Fee Payment Reminder
The University of the West Indies Mona Campus wishes to remind all students that the deadline for the payment of all tuition fees for the first semester of the 2005-2006 academic year is September 30.
Students who do not comply with the payment deadline will not have completed their registration and will be given
compulsory leave of absence for the semester. Such students will not be able to access facilities such as the Health Centre and the Library.
First Premium Teaching Lecture
The University of the West Indies and Guardian Life Limited present the first Premium Teaching Lecture at Mona on Thursday, October 6 at 5:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. This bi-ennial event which alternates with the premium, teaching award is designed to reflect 21st century trends in teaching and learning and enhance the quality of teaching at UWI.
Professor Denis Benn
Professor Denis Benn, who is the Michael Manley Professor of Public Policy at UWI has been invited to serve as Cyrus Vance Professor of International Relations at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, USA for the fall 2005 semester. Mount Holyoke is part of a consortium of five universities which also includes Amherst, Hampshire and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The consortium connects students to 30,000 other students and the vast academic resources of four prominent colleges and a flagship research institution.
Quality Assurance Reviews
The Department of Management Studies will be staging its Quality Assurance Reviews from September 19 to 23. This is being facilitated by the Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies and is part of the University’s efforts to maintain and enhance the learning experience of UWI students as well as to ensure the maintenance of appropriate output standards.
UWI Scientist participates in International
Course in Sustainable Coastal Development
Marine Scientist and Manager of the Caribbean Coastal Data Centre at the UWI, Marcia Creary, has been selected to participate in a five week advance international training course in Sustainable Coastal Development in Sweden starting September 10.
Impersonation of UWI Personnel
It has come to the attention of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, that individuals have been visiting homes of students of the UWI purporting to be conducting background checks on behalf of the University.
The Management of the University of the West Indies wishes to inform the public that no such authorization has been given to anyone by the UWI, and that if approached, they should immediately contact the University at 935-8947 or the nearest police station.
Music Unit offers courses
The Music Unit which is housed at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts is offering non-credit courses effective September 19. Guitar (Mondays, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.), Voice (Wednesdays, 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.), Piano and Caribbean Rhythms (drums and percussion) on week days at the convenience of the tutor and student. Spanish and French classes being offered
The Language Lab’s programme for Spanish and French will be held from September 26 to December 5. The levels being offered in Spanish are Beginners’ and Intermediate I and II and Basic Spanish for Medical Purposes; and in French, Beginners’ I and II and Intermediate I. The offers depend on the demand and the minimum number of persons per class is ten.
