Registration packages are ready for collection
All returning students who are Jamaican residents, as well as all medical students who have not yet collected their Registration packages are asked to do so at the Assembly Hall from August 8 to 28, 8:30 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.
Returning students residing in other contributing countries of the Caribbean are asked to collect their packages from the UWI School of Continuing Studies in their respective countries and from the Cave Hill (Barbadian residents) and St. Augustine (residents of Trinidad and Tobago) Campuses beginning August 11.
Summer Workshop on Capoeira
The Embassy of Brazil, through the Latin American-Caribbean Centre of UWI, is hosting a two-week summer capoeira workshop from August 8 - 20 at the Students’ Union Gym on the Mona Campus.
Organized specifically for participants in the Youth Training and Empowerment Programme, the capoeira workshop will expose students to capoeira, a creative and defensive form of martial arts that is harmonized into a dance with music.
Capoeira has its origins in the need of Brazilian slaves to protect themselves without the use of weapons, which they were forbidden to carry or own.

UWI hosts Generating Genius programme
A group of twelve-year old British boys teamed up with their Jamaican counterparts last weekend to participate in the first of an annual four-week training programme on the campus of the University of the West Indies, entitled Generating Genius.
The brainchild of Dr. Tony Sewell, Associate Lecturer of Leeds University in London, Generating Genius is designed to develop higher standards of education in the areas of medicine and research science among boys in Jamaica and the UK.
Graduate Studies and Research
Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris announced recently that Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor the Hon Errol Morrison, Dean of the School for Graduate Studies and Co-Chair of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research, has been granted a one-year leave of absence to assume leadership of Blue Cross of Jamaica. The Vice Chancellor has publicly thanked Professor Morrison for the energy and sense of entrepreneurship that he brought to his duties as PVC for Graduate Studies.
Substance Abuse Workshop
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work will host a Substance Abuse Workshop on July 23 beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Room GLT1 Faculty of Social Sciences. The topic of the Workshop is Substance Abuse – The Psychological Perspective. For further information telephone 970-3896.
UWI Development and Endowment Fund Call for Papers
The UWI Development and Endowment Fund is issuing a Call for Sessions for the Caribbean Conference on Philanthropy (II), which will be held from May 2-6, 2006 in Montego Bay.

Book Launch - The Jamaica Pre School Child
Profiles – The Jamaica Pre-School Child, The Status of Early Childhood Development in Jamaica’ is the title of a publication by Senior Lecturer in Child Health at the UWI Mona Campus, Dr Maureen Samms Vaughan, which was launched at the Planning Institute of Jamaica, recently. The landmark research initiative examines pre-primary children, assesses their learning environments and identifies key issues affecting outcomes for child development.
Biotechnology Training Course for Science Teachers
The Biotechnology Centre in collaboration with the Scientific Research Council, and the Ministry of Education will be hosting a one week training course on “Concepts in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering” geared for High School Science Teachers in Jamaica. The programme was developed and will be delivered by members of staff at the Biotechnology Centre. The objective is to provide an avenue for some science teachers to increase their knowledge and to provide practical hands on laboratory experience in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
