Seminar: Acquisition of French as a Foreign Language

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at UWI, Mona second Staff/Postgraduate seminar will discuss research on the acquisition of French as a foreign language by Jamaica learners of French. The seminar takes place on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 5 pm at Rom 02. Dr. Hugues Peters, a past French Lecturer at UWI, Mona will make the presentation. 
 
The Department will also host a seminar on April 5, 2012. The presenters will be Dr. Maite Villoria and Mr. Warrick Lattibeaudiere.

The Silver Sword Plays at UWI, Mona

The University Dramatic Arts Society (UDAS) will stage Stuart Henson “Silver Sword” from the novel by Ian Serrailer. The production is directed by Brian Heap and takes place from March 22-25 at The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.  Showings take place as follows:
Thursday, March 22 at 3 pm 
Friday, March 23 at 10 am and 1 pm 
Saturday, March 24 at 5 pm (2 shows)
Sunday, March 25 at 5 pm 
 
The play is a stage adaptation of the celebrated children’s novel by Ian Serraillier, which follows the story of the Balicki family as they trek across war-torn Europe in search of their lost parents, accompanied by the street-urchin Jan and his talisman— the Silver Sword.
 

Public Seminar: E-Participation of Youth in Politics

“E-Participation in Jamaica: Can Facebook Encourage Political Talk among Politically Apathetic Jamaican Youth?” is the topic of the presentation to be delivered by Dr. Lloyd Waller, Lecturer, Department of Government at UWI, Mona. The presentation will be a part of the Department’s Seminar Series and is slated to take place on Thursday, March 22 at 2:30 pm at Seminar Room 4 (SR4), UWI, Mona.
               

Storm Saulter for March is Movie Month on March 16

Award winning filmmaker, Storm Saulter, Director of the 2010 film, Better Mus' Come, will be the featured presenter at the March is Movie Month Series on Friday, March 16. The session begins at 6:00pm and will be held in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) the UWI, Mona. Storm will show his film as well as speak about the challenges he faced in bringing it to the screen.
 
 The March is Movie Month Series is hosted by the Departmnent of Literatures in English and the Institute of Caribbean Studies, University of the West Indies, Jamaica.
 
 The university community and the public are invited.

Public Seminar- Using Social Media in Library Outreach

The Department of Library and Information Studies, UWI, Mona will host a Graduate Research Seminar on Friday, March 16 at 3:30 pm at the Department’s Seminar Room.  The presentation will be delivered by Mrs. Joan McDermott, Graduate Student in the Department of Library and Information Studies. Her presentation is entitled, "The Application of the Social Networks in the Delivery of Library Outreach   Services: A Case Study of the National Library of Jamaica."

Graduate Scholarships and Bursaries in Climate Change Studies

UWI, along with the CARIBSAVE Partnership and the University of Waterloo (UW), Canada, are inviting Caribbean nationals doing graduate studies in the area of climate change, to apply for scholarships and bursaries under the joint research project entitled, ‘Partnership for Canada-Caribbean Community Climate Change Adaptation (ParCA).’

Filmmaker Chris Browne for March is Movie Month Series

“March is Movie Month at Mona”, a weekly series at UWI on Jamaican film, continues on Friday March 9 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. This week features a presentation by Chris Browne entitled, “A Retrospective: The Work of Jamaican Filmmaker Chris Browne”. In his presentation Browne will speak about the challenges he has faced as a filmmaker in Jamaica and will show clips from his feature films as well as screen some of his short films.
 

Developing Diaspora Bonds is the Focus of Public Lecture at UWI, Mona

“Diaspora Bonds: Partnering with the Diaspora for Investment and Economic Growth” is the title of the public lecture organized by the Mona School of Business, UWI, Jamaica Diaspora Institute and the World Bank. The Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Dilip Ratha, Lead Economist and Manager of the Joint Migration and Remittances Team in the Development Prospects Group, World Bank. The event is set for Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Executive Seminar Room, Faculty of Law at UWI, Mona. 
 
The Lecture will discuss how developing countries can harness Diaspora investments for financing development and the interests of the Diaspora community for investing.  
 

UWI Pop Society Concert- Rhythm of Life

The UWI Pop Society presents Rhythm of Life on March 8-10, 2012 at 7 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA). Guest performances will include: Chevaughn Clayton each night, Camille Davis on Friday and Saturday night and Michael Harris on Saturday night. 
 
Tickets are available at the Philip Sherlock Centre at $600 (presold) and UWI, Mona student groups of 5 or more at $500 each and $800 at the gate. For additional information and tickets interested persons may contact at PSCCA or call 408-6862/ 787-1935.
 

Archaeology Public Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology at UWI, Mona celebrates Archeology Week with a public lecture on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 pm at Room N3, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is entitled, “Recording and Preserving a Newly Discovered Cemetery on the UWI Mona Campus.” Dr. Stephan Lenik, Lecturer in the Department of History and Archaeology at UWI, Mona will deliver the Lecture.
