UWI Lecturer Participates in International Visitor Leadership Project

Mrs. Lisa-Ann Vasciannie, Lecturer, Department of Government was among eight women selected from the Caribbean to participate in US International Visitor Leadership project entitled ''Women's Leadership and Political Participation (Caribbean)''. The Project was administered by the State Department's Voluntary Visitors Division and conducted from October 11 - 19, 2011. The Women were drawn from Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, and Suriname.
Leonard Howell Documentary Showing: The First Rasta

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI, Mona will join in this year’s National Heritage celebrations in collaboration with the UWI National Heritage Month Committee, the UWI Rastafari Studies Initiative, and the Leonard Howell Foundation. The celebration will take the form of the Jamaican Premiere of the Leonard Howell Documentary; First Rasta- A Focus on the Contribution of the Rastafari Patriach, Leonard Howell, to the Rastafari Movement.
Korean Chargé de Affairs Delivers Lecture at UWI, Mona

Kimo Lim, Chargé de Affairs of Republic of Korea to Jamaica will deliver a guest lecture on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 10:30 am at GLT 3, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is entitled, “The International Relations of Korea: Balancing the Poles of Power.” The event is organized by the Department of Government, UWI, Mona.

Public Lecture: Challenges in the Jamaican Bauxite Sector

“Management Challenges in the Bauxite Sector in Jamaica” is the topic of the public lecture hosted by the Department of Management Studies at UWI, Mona. Jerome Maxwell, President, Alcoa Jamaica Limited will deliver the main address. The event takes place on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 6 pm in Seminar Room 16 (SR 16), UWI, Mona.

University Players to Stage Award Winning Play: ‘Not About Eve’

‘Not About Eve’. is the title of the provocative play, to be staged by the University Players, the award-winning resident theatre company of the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA), beginning this Saturday, October 15. The play won the International Theatre Institute’s Actor Boy Award for Best New Play when it was first staged in Jamaica in 2006, and recently has been given prestigious public readings by the Black National Theatre in New York, and at the annual Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The play is written by UWI, Mona graduate, Karl Williams.
UWI, Mona Hosts Peter Tosh Symposium

The Peter Tosh Symposium is organized by the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work and the National Heritage Month Committee at UWI, Mona as part of the activities to highlight National Heroes Day and showcase the contribution of notable individuals in the Jamaican society. In keeping with this the event is themed, “Peter Tosh: Activist, protagonist and Musical Genius: One of Jamaica’s Unsung Heroes.” The Symposium takes place on Peter Tosh’s ‘Earthday’, Wednesday, October 19 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The panelists on the occasion will include Dr. Omar Davis, Dr. Clinton Hutton and Copeland Forbes.
UWI, Mona Hosts Seminar on the Financial Regulatory Regime in Jamaica

The Department of Government at UWI, Mona presents the first seminar in its Departmental/Graduate Research Seminar Series for the 2011/2012 academic year on Thursday, October 21, 2011 at 2:30 pm at SR4, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is entitled, “The Adequacy of the Financial Regulatory Regime in Post Colonial State: The Case of Jamaica". Ms. Shirley-Ann Eaton, lecturer and attorney-at-law will deliver the Lecture on this occasion.
The presentation seeks to examine the adequacy of financial regulation and regulatory practices against the background of changes and difficulties in Jamaica's financial system during the three distinct periods of differing economic development approaches, namely: the late 1950's to 1972; 1972 to 1980; and 1980 to the present.
Cricket Public Lecture
“Love, Legacies, Liabilities: The Confusions of Contemporary Cricket” is the title of the public lecture to be delivered by Mike Coward, author, journalist and commentator. The Lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 6 pm at Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The event is organized by UWI, Mona in association with the Frank Worrell Memorial Committee.
Critical Thinking Teaching Workshop - “The Nuts and Bolts of Learner-Centred Teaching”

If a teacher aspires to teach in ways that promote learning, what does that teacher do about the nuts and bolts of instructional practice? What would that teacher do about tests, papers, lecturing, group work, content and grades while seeking to balance the learning needs of today’s university students with the content and skill demands of degree and professional programmes? How can lecturers promote critical thinking in the midst of such a juggling act?
Seminar on Air Travel in the Caribbean: Challenges and Opportunities

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Centre for Tourism and Policy Research will host a seminar entitled, “Air Travel in the Caribbean: Challenges and Opportunities. “ Honourable Mike Henry, Ministry of Transport and Work will share at the seminar.
