Award-winning Writer, Olive Senior, Launches First Novel, Dancing Lessons

Prize-winning Jamaican author, Olive Senior, will launch her first novel, Dancing Lessons, on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona Campus. Dancing Lessons has been described as “sad, satirical, hilarious, and ultimately redemptive. A novel infused with the cadences and colour of Jamaica yet connecting with anyone anywhere who engages with notions of family, love, loss, friendship, and belonging.” This new novel is further acknowledgment of Ms. Senior’s prodigious talent.
 

CARIMAC Students Tackle Stress With Health and Wellness Expo

 
The final year Public Relations students from the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at UWI, Mona will stage a Health and Wellness Expo dubbed, “F.R.A.S.S: Fit Ready And Striving For Success.” The Expo takes place on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 11 am at the Rex Nettleford Hall Multifunctional Room, UWI, Mona.
 

UWI, Mona Hosts Education Forum

 
The School of Education at UWI, Mona has organized a Forum on Education under the theme, “Education Transformation – Determining the Gain and Refocusing on the Challenges.” The event takes place on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 5 pm at Lecture Theatre 1, Faculty of Law, UWI, Mona. 
 

UWI Hosts Lecture on Teaching History and African Diaspora in Brazil

“Teaching Slavery and African Diaspora in Brazil: New Trends,” will be the topic of discussion at the public lecture organized by the Departments of Modern Languages and Literatures and History and Archaeology in association with the Embassy of Brazil. Professor Mariza de Carvalho Soares, Associate Professor in the Department of History at the Federal University of Fluminense will deliver the Lecture. The event takes place on Friday, November 25, 2011 at 11 am at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.

Public Lecture- The Power of Economic Growth

“How to Fix Everything: The Power of Economic Growth” is the title of the public lecture being delivered by Professor Steven Landsburg, Professor of Economics at University of Rochester. The Lecture takes place on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 6 pm at the Lecture Room 2 at the Faculty of Law, UWI, Mona.

UWI, Mona Netball Team Heads to Florida Classics

The UWI, Mona Senior Netball Team heads to the Florida Classics being held at Deerfield Beach, Florida to compete from November 18-20, 2011. While there they will defend their championship title against over 50 teams competing from approximately 11 countries including: , Canada, Antigua, The Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, Cayman Islands, Australia, New Zealand and England.

UWI Professors Among Featured Authors at 2011 Miami Book Fair

Professor Brian Meeks, Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies, UWI, Mona, and Professor Verene Shepherd, University Director of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies are among the featured authors at the Miami Book Fair. The event which takes place in South Florida from November 19 to 20, 2011 will see more than 350 authors reading and discussing their work. Both prolific authors, Professors Shepherd and Meeks have published widely on Caribbean History and Gender and Caribbean Political Thought respectively. The UWI Professors will be two of the guests on the panel Caribbean Voices: Post-Colonial Themes on November 19 during the Street Fair.
 
 

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture to Share at Anti-Doping Workshop Hosted by UWI, Mona

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host an Anti-doping in Sports Workshop on Saturday, November 26, 2011 starting at 8:30 am the Main Lecture Theatre at the Faculty of Law, UWI, Mona. The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Olivia Babsy Grange will speak on this occasion.
 

UWI, Mona & Ministry of Mining Hosts Energy Awareness Expo

The University of the West Indies, Mona in association with the Ministry of Energy and Mining in celebration of CARICOM Energy Week will stage an Energy Awareness Expo on November 10-11 on the Lawns facing the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The Expo will officially open on Thursday, November 10 at 9 am with an Opening Ceremony on the Lawns facing the Undercroft.
 

Blood Drive 2011

The University of the West Indies, Mona partners with the National Blood Transfusion Service to host a Blood Drive on November 9 -10, 2011 starting at 9 am daily in the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona.  The Blood Drive is a part of the organizers effort to encourage blood donation as a habit. The UWI is a major corporate blood donor hosting at least two Blood Drives annually.
 
The university community is invited to participate in the Blood Donation efforts. For more information interested persons may telephone the UWI Health Centre at 970-1992.
