Special Issue of Critical Arts Journal Dedicated to Late UWI Professors

A Special Issue of the Critical Arts: South – North Cultural and Media Studies Journal will be launched on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. This Special Issue is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Ralston “Rex” Nettleford and Professor Alston “Barry” Shepherd. The Issue is edited by UWI Professors, Rupert Lewis and Hopeton Dunn.
 

UWI Examines Women and Citizenship in First Through Women’s Eyes Conversation

“Women and Citizenship in Jamaica” is the title of the first conversation in the series dubbed Through Women’s Eyes: Conversations on Independence set for Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 5 pm at Liberty Hall, 76 Kings Street. The Conversation which takes the form of a panel discussion will include panelists: Professor Verene Shepherd, Director, Institute for Gender and Development Studies (Regional Coordinating Unit) who will provide an historical perspective on the topic and Renee Nelson who will speak to the issue of Jamaican Women and the Referendum.

Confucius Institute Lecture Explores the Unity and Diversities between Chinese and Western Culture

The Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona presents its third anniversary Lecture on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre. This year’s lecture is entitled, "Chinese Culture and Western Culture - Unity within Diversities". Professor Zhao Yang, of the School of Chinese as a Second Language, Beijing University, China will deliver the Lecture. 
 
Professor Zhao Yang holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Beijing Foreign Studies University, a Masters in Linguistics from Beijing University and a Doctoral degree from Cambridge University, also in Linguistics. His research is focused primarily on Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics and Generative Grammar. 
 

Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts International Festival Features Son et Lumière Performance

The annual Philip Sherlock Lecture entitled, ‘A Light Rising from the West’ will be presented as a Son et Lumière performance as part of the Philip Sherlock International Festival slated for February 23 to March 4. The event takes place on Monday, February 27 at 7:30 pm on the front of the Main Portico of the University Chapel. The performance feature contributions from: The University Singers, UWI Chorale, UWI Pop Society, UWI Panoridim Steel Orchestra, University Dance Society, University Dramatic Arts Society and the UWI Camera Club. 

UWI, Mona Hosts Public Lecture Entitled "Returning Garvey to the Caribbean"

“Returning Garvey to the Caribbean” is the title of the public lecture hosted by the Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 5:30 pm in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Emeritus Robert Hill, Professor Emeritus of History at UCLA and Editor in Chief of the multivolume edition of The Marcus Garvey & Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers.

UWI and South African High Commission Launch Year of Celebrations

The South African High Commission in collaboration with The University of the West Indies will host a Launch to highlight the yearlong celebration of specific milestones namely: the Centenary of the African National Congress; the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence and the 125th Anniversary of Marcus Garvey’s birth.

The Launch takes place on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.

Speaking on the occasion will be Her Excellency Ms. Mathu Joyini, the South African High Commissioner.

UWI, Mona Career Expo and Job Fair Provides Map for the Future

“Mapping Your Future: Transforming Jamaica” is the theme of the 21st annual Career Expo being hosted by the Office of Placement and Career Services at UWI, Mona. The Expo commences with an Opening Ceremony on February 23 at 10.00 a.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.  Shadow Spokesman on Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Investment, Senator, Dr. Christopher Tufton will be the guest speaker on this occasion. The two day event which runs from February 23 to 24, 2012 will see over forty (40) companies participating through booth displays at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona.

Notions of Beauty - Black History Symposium

"Notions of Beauty in black communities globally: Rituals of positive affirmation and denigration of the black body with a special focus on notions of good hair vs. bad hair and additional dialogue on skin bleaching" is the title of a special Black History Symposium to be presented by the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work this Friday, February 24 in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) fro 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Panellists include Dr Clinton Hutton, Dr Imani Tafari, Dr Christopher Charles and Annie Paul with Dr Michael Barnett as chairperson. The documentary “Good Hair” by Chris Rock will also be screened along with the panel discussion.

15th Annual Bob Marley Lecture

 
“For the Record: Bob Marley's Island Albums and the 40th Anniversary of Catch a Fire,” is the title of the 15th annual Bob Marley Lecture being staged by the Institute of Caribbean Studies at UWI, Mona. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Mike Alleyne of the Department of Recording Industry, Middle Tennessee State University. Professor Alleyne’s work in the field includes the publication of many journal articles and book chapters on Caribbean popular music.  The event is set for Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 6:00 p.m in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. 
 

UWI, Mona Perinatal Conference Explores Twin Pregnancy

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UWI, Mona will explore Twin Pregnancy during its 11th annual Perinatal Conference slated for February 11-12 at 8:30 am daily at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital. Professor Jon Barrett, Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist and Chief Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at the University of Toronto will be the guest speaker. His lecture will focus on Monochorionic Gestation: its dangers and diagnosis.
