UNI-T Fun Run/Biathlon: “Run 4 Your Life”

The University of the West Indies, Mona, The University of Technology (UTech) and Children and Community for Change are partnering to host the UNI-T Fun Run/Biathlon on Sunday, February 11, under the theme “Run 4 Your Life.” Under the patronage of Asafa Powell, the event aims to enhance community spirit and encourage and engage the community into healthier lifestyles.

Caribbean Journal of Education - Call for Papers

The School of Education invites the submission of papers for the Caribbean Journal of Education for a special issue on Language Use and the Jamaican Education System by Tuesday, January 30. Papers should focus on the Jamaican Creole and the Jamaican English Language usage and the implications for the education system under seven specified sub themes.

11th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work hosts its 11th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar on Saturday, January 27 under the theme: Gender: Community Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century. The event takes place at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona at 9 am. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Leith Dunn, Head of Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit.

5th Caribbean Neurosciences Symposium

The Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the University Hospital of the West Indies will host the 5th Caribbean Neurosciences Symposium from January 25-27 at the Ritz Carlton, Rose Hall, Montego Bay. The honouree for the Symposium is Dr. Kingsley Chin of the University of Pennsylvania who will also deliver the keynote lecture on Saturday, January 27.

Anniversary of the 1907 Earthquake Presentation

The Jamaican Historical Society will mark the anniversary of the 1907 earthquake with two presentations on Tuesday, January 23, in the Multifunction Room of the Main Library, UWI, Mona at 6:00 p.m. This is in keeping with January being declared as Earthquake Awareness month by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). Dr. Margaret Wiggins-Grandison of the Earthquake Unit, Department of Geography and Geology, UWI and M.A. student Antoinette Brown of the Department of History and Archaeology will make presentations on the topic “The 1907 Earthquake”. Application for Higher Degrees Opens

Applications are now invited for suitably qualified persons who wish to pursue higher degree programmes commencing in September 2007. The deadline for the receipt of completed application forms is January 31. Final year students are advised to apply for entry to the programme of their choice by this deadline.

Career Awareness Month

Placement and Career Services, the Office of Student Services and Development, declares February as Career Awareness Month as such several activities are scheduled to take place in recognition of the month. The theme for this year is “Career Development for Sustainability in the Global Workplace.” A Dress for Success and Fashion show will open the activities planned for the month on Thursday, February 1 at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre at 3:00 pm.

Precautions before an Earthquake
Below are actions you need to take today!!!
1. Unstable, heavy furniture should be fastened to the
wall or bolted to the floor.
2. When loading storage cabinets, heavy objects should
be placed on lower shelves.
3. Always have non perishable food items in stock.
4. Family members should know basic First Aid and
Emergency Contact Numbers.
5. Purchase emergency equipment such as battery

Fee Payment Deadlines

The second semester for the 2006/7 academic year officially began on Sunday, January 14 while teaching resumed on Monday, January 15. The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, wishes to advise that all tuition and Hall fees (where applicable) for the second semester become due and payable at the start of the semester. Registration without penalty was allowed up to Friday, January 19.

Fundamentals of Ageing Course Offering

The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry announces the availability of an online course in ageing HE65B, The Fundamentals of Ageing for University graduate students. Enrollment closes January 31.
The course covers topics such as the social, psychological and physiological aspects of ageing and the socio-cultural aspects of ageing. It is designed for students who wish to garner better understanding of the ageing process and to assist others to achieve healthy ageing.
