Perinatal Conference 2007

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, UWI, Mona will host its Perinatal Conference 2007 under the theme “Perinatal Nutrition” from February 9-10. The keynote address will be given by Professor Allan Jackson on ‘Long term effects of impaired in utero nutrition.’ There will also be workshops covering several topics including: Breastfeeding, Maternal Nutrition hosted by Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) and Obesity in pregnancy. The Conference will take place in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Renowned Novelist Reads at UWI, Mona

The Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona, in collaboration with the Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee, invites the University community and the public to hear acclaimed Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe read from his work on Thursday, January 4 at 4:00 p.m. at the Undercroft. A prolific novelist, poet and essayist, Chinua Achebe is best known for the canonical texts Things Fall Apart (1958), No Longer at Ease (1960), Arrow of God (1964), A Man of the People (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987).

Road Work at Queen’s Way Entrance and Traffic Light Installation

The University of the West Indies, Mona wishes to advise that construction of a slip road will take place in the vicinity of Queen’s Way Entrance from January 2-16.
Traffic lights are also expected to be installed at the Queen’s Way Entrance in early February. This is in order to facilitate a smoother flow of traffic thereby preventing undue delay and to improve safety.
The University apologies for any inconvenience resulting from this road work and asks for your usual cooperation in order to ensure that a level of normalcy is maintained.

Teaching Skills Workshop

The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) invites members of the academic and senior administrative staff to participate in its annual 3-day Teaching Skills Workshop to be held from Tuesday January 9 – Thursday January 11 at the IDU Training Room from 9 am to 4: 30 pm daily.

Wellness Tips

1. Have you had your medical, dental or optical check for this year? If you are past due for one of these then call your health practitioner now and make your appointment. Of course we all know we should schedule these checks regularly but most of us forget to do so. It helps if you schedule them for the same time each year. The start of the academic year may be a good time to schedule these visits. You can build them into your getting ready for school routine.

Call for Papers for the Sixth Annual Psychology Conference

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, Psychology Unit hosts its sixth annual Psychology Conference from February 26-28, 2007. The Department invites the submission of papers on the theme: Impact of Psychology in the Caribbean by January 5, 2007. Both oral and poster presentations will be selected.

Campus Registrar Awardees

Four members of the Registry staff were presented with the Campus Registrar Award for excellence in executing their duties at the recently held Campus Registrar’s Luncheon. The awards are presented for the following categories: productivity, initiative, service and in at least two of the areas. Howard McLean, Employee Relations Officer and Jahrell Walford, Courier Attendant both of the Human Resource Management Division were awarded for initiative and service respectively.

Graduation Photographs

The photographs taken at the 2006 Graduation ceremonies are now available and may be collected at the Public Relations Office during working hours 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Mondays – Fridays) with the exception of Friday, December 29 when UWI offices close at 12:30 pm. Portrait photographs taken by graduates may be collected from 2¼ Works Studio, located at 59 Hope Road from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Institute of Caribbean Studies Course Offerings

The Institute of Caribbean Studies invites second and third year UWI students to register for the following courses in semester II of the 2006/2007 academic year: Caribbean Films and Their Fictions (AR25F), Deconstructing the Culture of Sport (AR25S), African Religious Retentions in the Caribbean (AR25X), Discourses in Cultural Studies (AR35A) and Rastafari in the Global Context (AR35R).
