Mock Interview Programme
The Office of Student Services and Development, Placement and Career Services will hold its annual Mock Interview Programme on Thursday, February 8 and 15. This is in keeping with February being highlighted as Career Awareness Month. All final year students are invited to participate in the Programme.
Résumé forms for this programme may be obtained from Placement and Career Services as of Monday January 15, where interviews should also be booked between 10:00 am - 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm daily. The deadline for registration is Thursday, February 1.
Mona School of Business Open House
The Mona School of Business, The University of the West Indies invites applicants and prospective applicants to attend its Open House Forum on Wednesday, January 17 at 6 pm at the Alister McIntyre Building, UWI, Mona. The Forum serves to provide an occasion to answer questions, familiarize prospective students with the faculty and facilities and discuss matters such as potential students’ academic plans, financial arrangements and delivery options.
Applications for the 2007/8 academic year are now open and close on January 31.
Research Day 2007
The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts its annual Research Day on Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26 under the theme: “Higher Education: Pathway to Success.” Research Day 2007 will be declared open on January 25 by Minister of Education and Youth, Honourable Maxine Henry Wilson who will also be the guest speaker for the opening ceremony commencing at 9 am at the Undercroft.
UWI Researchers Featured in the Prestigious Lancet
Findings from recent research presented in an issue of The Lancet involving two researchers from the University of the West Indies show that more than 200 million children under 5 years fail to reach their potential in cognitive development because of poverty, poor health and nutrition, and lack of early stimulation. This was presented in the first paper in a three part Series on child development, which began on January 6.
Writing Across the Curriculum Workshops
The Department of Language, Linguitics and Philosphy hosts two one day workshops on Writing Across the Curriculum on Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13 for the faculties Pure and Applied Sciences and Humanities and Education respectively. These workshops will be conducted by Professor of English and Director of Campus Writing and Speaking Programme at North Carolina State University, Professor Chis Anson.
11th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work hosts the 11th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar on January 27 under the theme: Gender: Community Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century. The event takes place at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona at 9 am. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Leith Dunn, Head of Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit.
Caribbean Journal of Education-Call for Papers
The School of Education invites the submission of papers for the Caribbean Journal of Education for a special issue on Language Use and the Jamaican Education System by January 30. Papers should focus on the Jamaican Creole and the Jamaican English Language usage and the implications for the education system under seven specified sub themes.

Certificate Courses at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA)
The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA) seeks to encourage creativity and equip individuals with income generating skills as well as foster personal development. These developmental skills will give individuals the edge necessary to fulfill speaking and presenting engagements allowing them to stay on top of the game. In addition, the Centre offers activities that will stimulate the mind and also function as good leisure time therapy.
Department of Physics Hosts Workshops for CAPE Students
As part of the Department of Physics’ outreach effort and in response to requests from teachers of the CAPE syllabus, the Department will host a series of workshops for CAPE physics students from Tuesday, January 9 – Friday, January 12 beginning at 9:00 a.m. daily.
The workshops will focus on the problematic area of Operational Amplifiers covered in the Electronics Section of CAPE Unit 2. The activities are designed to cover the theory and to give the students hands-on experience with operational amplifier circuit operation.
Fee Payment Deadlines
The second semester for the 2006/7 academic year officially begins on Sunday, January 14 while teaching resumes Monday, January 15. The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, wishes to advise that all tuition and Hall fees (where applicable) for the second semester become due and payable at the start of the semester. Registration without penalty is allowed up to Friday, January 19. Late registration and the applicable penalty of a fee of J$1000 as well as a fine of one per cent (1%) of outstanding tuition fees apply as of Monday, January 22.
