Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work

The Social Welfare Training Centre of the School of Continuing Studies will begin its Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work on Wednesday, January 10. The course is a one of its kind in the region designed to meet the needs of persons working in the broad area of social welfare either as professionals or voluntary workers in recognized agencies who have not had professional training in social work. For this year fifty-four individuals from four countries namely: Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica will participate.

Mona GeoInformaticS Training Schedule

Mona GeoInformaticS (MonaGIS) is offering Introductory and Advanced GIS training courses at the Mona Informatix Ltd facility, UWI, Mona. Classes will begin Monday, January 15 and end Thursday, February 22. Other introductory course offerings include Introduction to Cartography and 3D Spatial Modeling Module.

New Master of Arts in Teaching Programme

Commencing in June 2007 the School of Education will be offering for the first time a self financed Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T). The Programme is expected to run over five semesters and three summers and is offered on a part-time basis. At the end of the first year students will have the option of exiting the Programme and will receive a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education, while those who complete the entire Programme will be awarded the Master of Arts in Teaching.

Research Day 2007

The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the annual Research Day from Thursday, January 25 to Friday, January 26 under the theme: “Higher Education: Pathway to Success.” Research Day 2007 will be declared open on January 25 by Minister of Education and Youth, Honourable Maxine Henry Wilson who will also be the guest speaker for the opening ceremony which commence at 9:00 a.m. at the Undercroft.

Research, Publications and Graduate Awards

Applications are invited for the Research and Publications and Graduate Awards for which application forms are available at www.mona.uwi.edu\postgrad. An electronic copy of the application form should be submitted to postgrad@uwimona.edu.jm by January 16 in addition to two hard copies signed by Head of Department and supervisor. UWI, Mona Hosts Inter Campus Games 2007

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will host the bi annual Inter Campus Games to be held May 17-24. The Inter Campus Games features competitive sporting activities among the UWI Campuses. The Games will have ten competitive sports this year, reflecting an increase from six in previous years. The following sporting activities will be contested: track and field, cricket, netball, football, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, hockey, basketball and lawn tennis.

11th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work hosts its flagship conference on January 27 under the theme Gender: Community Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century. The event takes place at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT), UWI, Mona at 9:00 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Leith Dunn, Head of Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit.

Call for Papers for the Sixth Annual Psychology Conference

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, Psychology Unit hosts its sixth annual Psychology Conference from February 26-28.. The Department invites the submission of papers on the theme: Impact of Psychology in the Caribbean by January 5. Both oral and poster presentations will be selected.

Graduation Photographs

The photographs taken at the 2006 Graduation ceremonies are now available and may be collected at the Public Relations Office during working hours 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Mondays – Fridays) with the exception of Friday, December 29 when UWI offices close at 12:30 pm. Portrait photographs taken by graduates may be collected from 2¼ Works Studio, located at 59 Hope Road from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.

New Online Catalogue System in January

The three campuses of the University of the West Indies i.e. Mona, Cave Hill and St. Augustine will be implementing a new, state-of-the-art integrated online system in its libraries in 2007. The Mona Campus will launch the system on Wednesday, January 3. This means that the users of the library will encounter a completely new online catalogue that is more user-friendly and provides improved services.
