Rex Nettleford Hall of Residence Reading Room
The Rex Nettleford Hall of Residence will be opening its Reading Room on Saturday, October 30. The Reading Room is intended to provide students with additional reading resources in an environment conducive to the pursuit of intellectual endeavours as well as social engagement via reading and discussions. The Reading Room will also provide students with the opportunity to do research and access other materials free of cost.
Twenty Seven Open Scholarships for the 2004 – 2005 Academic Year
The University of the West Indies has awarded some twenty seven open scholarships for the 2004 – 2005 academic year. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit as assessed by the University Scholarship Examination which is set each year. Eleven of the awardees will pursue studies at the UWI’s Mona Campus, three will attend at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados and the remaining thirteen will pursue undergraduate studies at the St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad.
Visit of Prize-Winning Nigerian Writer, Funso Aiyejina
The Philip Sherlock Centre at The University of the West Indies Mona Campus will host a Visit of Prize-Winning Nigerian Writer, Funso Aiyejina, from October 14 – 20, in celebration of National Heritage Week. Dr. Aiyejina is a senior lecturer at the UWI St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad. While in Jamaica, he will conduct workshops in Creative Writing, present a public lecture on Orisha Worship, give a public reading from his work and participate in a discussion forum on Education: Culture and Arts.
‘One of Our Sons’
The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts initiates its season of plays exploring Caribbean responses to issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, with the opening of Godfrey Sealey’s drama ‘One of Our Sons….’. Previously staged under the title “One of Our Sons is missing”, the play takes an uncompromising look at the risks to which young people may be exposed in their relationships, often without being fully aware of them.
25th Anniversary of the Learning Resource Centre at the Cave Hill Campus
The Learning Resource Centre at the Cave Hill Campus of The University of the West Indies is celebrating its 25th Anniversary during the academic year 2004 – 2005. One of the activities identified to mark this milestone will be the publication of a peer reviewed collection of papers that examine or reflect on any aspect or educational, instructional, learning and information support services in tertiary institutions in development countries. The commemorative publication will be titled “New Directions in University Education – Perspectives from the Developing World”.
A Service of Thanksgiving - Professor Emeritus, The Hon. Gladstone Mills
A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Professor Emeritus, the Hon. Gladstone Mills will be held on Wednesday, October 6, at the University Chapel, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Professor Mills established an international reputation for his work in Public Administration and served the University for some thirty years.
A Seventies Reunion Week
The Office of Alumni Relations at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus wants to get in touch with all Alumni who graduated from the Campus between 1970 and 1979. A Seventies Reunion Week is being planned for October this year as part of Alumni Month. Alumni who graduated from any UWI Campus during this period are invited to come back to UWI to have a grand time of fun, memories and lots of laughter. Alumni from other decades are also welcome to participate.
Burn To Learn
Janet Walters a graduate of the Jamaica School of Drama and English major at UWI Mona, is staging her play Burn to Learn from October 8-9 at the Philip Sherlock Centre at 7:00 p.m. each night.
First Premium Teaching Award
The University of the West Indies in collaboration with Guardian Life, will host the first Premium Teaching Award at the Mona Campus on Thursday, October 7 at the Mona Visitors Lodge and Conference Centre, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Award recognizes the outstanding teaching accomplishments of the university’s academic staff. It is given exclusively for teaching, particularly in developing structures and processes that help to create an environment in which teaching excellence is valued and fostered.
New Vice Chancellor Assumes Office
Newly appointed Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor E. Nigel Harris, assumed office October 1. He succeeds Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford, who has retired after some 50 years of service to the UWI. Professor Harris comes to the UWI from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta where he was Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
