UWI Open Scholarship Applications

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is inviting applications for the prestigious UWI 2011 Open Scholarships. All applications for the UWI 2011 Open Scholarships must be submitted online at www.uwi.edu/openscholarship2011 by Monday, January 31, 2011.

Each year the University awards scholarships to top performing students across the region to pursue undergraduate degrees at the regional institution. The UWI Open Scholarships will cover tuition, residence costs, both on and off campus, and contributions to books and meals. Eligible applicants are prospective or current first year UWI students from a UWI contributing country with high academic achievements.

More Schools Participate in UWI, Mona Plastic Bottle Recycling Project

The University of the West Indies, Mona hosted the launch of the Expansion Phase of the UWI Environmental Outreach Plastic Bottle Recycling Project on Wednesday, January 5, 2010. The Expansion Phase will see thirteen (13) more primary, preparatory and high schools in the corporate area and St. Catherine participating in the Project. Thus far at least ten (10) schools in the Mona and Papine area are participating in the Project. Plans are also being put in place to expand the UWI Plastic Bottle Project to the UWI, Mona-Western Jamaica Campus.

UWI Panoridim in Concert on December 20

UWI Panoridim treats the university community to a solid hour of music as part of the Blue and White Christmas Concert series on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 7 pm on the Lawns facing the Undercroft. Come and listen to your favourite Christmas carol. Admission is free.

Book Launch- Jacket…or Full Suit?

 

Jacket…or Full Suit?:  Paternity Testing From a Jamaican Perspective is the title of the book authored by Mrs. Sonia King, a retired medical technologist. The book will be launched on Tuesday, December 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Undercroft, The University of the West Indies, Mona. Professor Carolyn Cooper will be the guest speaker at the launch which is co-hosted by the Institute of Gender and Development Studies and the Department of Literatures in English at UWI, Mona. 

In this entertaining and thought-provoking book, Mrs. King reveals her most exciting paternity cases having served for more than three decades as Head of the Paternity Testing Laboratory at the University Hospital of the West Indies. 

CARICOM–Cuba Day Celebrations Open at UWI, Mona

The Official opening of the CARICOM-Cuba Day Celebrations takes place on December 8 at 10 am at the Multifunctional Room, the Main Library, UWI Mona Campus. On this occasion, Ambassador Paul Robotham, Under Secretary, Bilateral and Regional Affairs Division will deliver the address. The event will also include a photo exhibition, short documentary and cultural performance. The University of the West Indies, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and The Embassy of Cuba in Jamaica have partnered to organize the Celebration.

Upgrade Seminar Explores Domestic Abuse Against Women in Jamaica

 

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies at UWI will host an upgrade seminar which will see Violet Ferreria-Sutherland making her presentation in a bid to upgrade from a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. The presentation is entitled: “Understanding Intersectionality, Identity Development and Domestic Violence against Women in Jamaica: Assessing the Effectiveness of Three Selected Social Welfare Agencies in Dealing with Women who Experience Domestic Violence”. 

It takes place on Monday, December 13, 2010 at 9 am in the Dean’s Conference Room in the Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona. 

The university community and the public are invited.  

Public Lecture

The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy presents a public lecture entitled, “African Departures: A Philosophy Perspective. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor John Murungi, Department Of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Towson University, Maryland, USA. The event takes place on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 5 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. 

The university community is invited to attend. 

Long Service Awards Ceremony

 

Over one hundred UWI, Mona employees will be recognized for their long and dedicated service to the University at the annual Long Service Awards Ceremony on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 5 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The guest speaker will be Ms. Minna Israel, Managing Director of Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (RBTT). 

On this occasion employees will be acknowledged for fifteen, twenty-one, thirty and forty years of service to the University. For further information please contact the Marketing and Communications Office at 935-8348 or 977-5941.

University Township Project Inaugural Tree Lighting Ceremony

The Township Project aims to consolidate the University’s efforts in community development and involves the use of UWI resources to promote educational development, skills training, health and nutrition, culture and sports in the greater August Town community. Already, basic schools in some of the communities and computer facilities in some schools have been upgraded and scholarships awarded to students and teachers from the August Town area. Training is also underway in collaboration with the HEART Trust/NTA and UWI, Mona converted one of its football fields as the home-ground for the August Town Football Club. Assistance is also being provided for an Ornamental Fish Farming initiative.

Book Launch-Under the Basil Leaves and On Friday Night, December 9

The Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona will host the launch of two books on Thursday, December 9 at 6.30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The books are Under Basil Leaves, an anthology of poems by Dr. Paulette Ramsay, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Mona and On Friday Night, the English translation of a novel by the Afro-Ecuadoran writer, Luz Argentina Chiriboga. On Friday Night was translated from Spanish into English by Dr. Ramsay and Dr. Anne-Maria Bankay, former Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies, UWI.
