Anthropology Day at UWI Celebrates Caribbean Rhythms, Heritage and Resistance

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work stages the third annual Anthropology Day under the theme Caribbean Rhythms: Cultural Heritage and Resistance in the Caribbean. The day’s activities take place on Friday October 15, 2010 starting at 10 am at the Undercroft.

Climate Change Public Lecture

The Departments of Physics and Geology and Geography at the UWI, Mona in collaboration with the US Embassy will host a Climate Change public lecture. The lecture takes place on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 5:30 pm in Physics Lecture Room B, UWI, Mona. Dr. Christopher Castro, Assistant Professor, Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona. His presentation is entitled, “Climate Change and the Caribbean: A Review.”
 
It is a part of a series on Climate Change presentations designed to increase awareness of issues related to the impact of climate change.

The university community and the public are invited.

UWI Chess Society Takes Scores Top Places in National Junior Chess Championship

Zachary Ramsay, Immediate Past President of the UWI Chess Society and third year Medical Sciences student was recently named the national Junior Chess Champion at the 2010 National Junior Chess Championship. Ramsay copped the title after finishing with a perfect score of six points from six games, including a win over two-time defending champion National Master Damion Davy. Davy, also a UWI student, majoring in Actuarial Sciences, received second place 4.5 points.

Boasting the top two finishers, the UWI Chess Society was adjudged the top Chess Club.

A We Dis? Cultural Representation of the Caribbean in Children’s Books

“A We Dis? Cultural Representation of the Caribbean in Children’s Books” is the title of the public lecture being organized by the Department of Library and Information Studies, UWI, Mona. The Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Cherrell Shelley-Robinson of the Department of Library Studies, UWI, Mona on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 5 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.

“Women and Leadership”

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies at UWI hosts a public lecture titled, “Women and Leadership” on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 5 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Rex Nettleford Hall, UWI, Mona The lecture will be delivered by Professor  Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

The university community, senior high school students and the public are invited.

National Heritage Film Series

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI, Mona presents a film series to highlight Jamaica’s National Heritage and as part of a campaign to have October designated as National Heritage month. The first film in the Series entitled, “Towards Black Nationalism” is a feature on Marcus Garvey, Jamaica’s first national hero. It details the life of Marcus Garvey and the contribution to the black community and his involvement in black empowerment and nationalism. The showing takes place on Friday October 8, 2010 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre.

Students Loans Bureau - A Feasible Option or Failed System

The Chancellor Hall Current Affairs Club will host its Grand Launch on Friday, October 8, 2010 at 5 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.  The Launch takes the format of a debate on the topic, “Students Loans Bureau - A Feasible Option or Failed System in Funding Tertiary Education?” The panel will feature representatives of the government, opposition, representatives from Generation 2000 (G2K) and the Peoples’ National Party Youth Organization (PNPYO), members of the UWI, Mona Guild of Students and members of the UWI administration.

The university community is invited.

Roy Kahn Johnston to Give Poetry Reading on Sunday October 3

The Department of Literatures in English at the UWI, Mona will host a poetry reading by Dr. Roy Kahn Johnston on Sunday, October 3 at 11 am at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. Dr. Johnston will read selections from his four books of poetry: Dissonance & Consonance (2009), Kenosis San Luis Obispo (2007), Seeds of Tolerance (2006) and The System is Broken (2004). 

UWI Triple P 20/20 Celebrity Cricket Match Postponed

The UWI Triple P 20/20 Cricket Match slated for October 2 has been postponed to Saturday, November 27. The Match will see students at the University of the West Indies facing off with cricket legends including the Honourable Courtney Walsh and Jimmy Adams and other noteworthy personalities such as  Trinidadian Minister of Education, Senator the Honourable Dr. Tim Gopeesingh,  in a friendly 20/20 "Triple P" cricket match at the UWI, Mona Bowl. 

Excellence in Teaching Recognized Through UWI/ Guardian Life Teaching Award

The University of the West Indies, Mona and Guardian Life Limited will host the fourth UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Awards Ceremony. The Ceremony takes place on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 6 pm at Guardian Life located at 12 Trafalgar Road, Kingston 10. The guest speaker will be Dr. Vanessa Sheared, Dean, College of Education, California State University, Sacramento. Her presentation is entitled, “Giving Voice- The Art of Teaching and Learning”.
