CARIMAC Students Partner to Promote Road Safety

The Public Relations Class of 2011 at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), UWI, Mona is partnering with major private and public sector organizations to promote road safety among UWI, Mona students. The activities are being coordinated through a campaign dubbed, “Wreckage”: Driving for “U” and WI”. The highlight of this campaign will be the staging of an Expo on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 3 pm at the Students’ Union, UWI, Mona. The Expo will feature a number of performances by Jamaica’s top recording artistes who have endorsed “Driving for U and WI” message.
UWI, Mona Hosts First International Symposium on Tropical Horticulture

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Department of Life Sciences will host the first International Symposium on Tropical Horticulture from November 23-26, 2010 at the Jamaica Pegasus. The Symposium features special presentations by local, regional and international experts. The event will feature presentations on a range of topics including: Irrigation and Pest Management, Technology of Tropical Crops, Biotechnology and Processing of Tropical Crops and Small Farming.
The event is designed to promote knowledge exchange, share best practices in the production of tropical crops and build linkages between specialists, practitioners, farmers and other industry experts.

UWI STAT Ambassadors Visit Cayman Islands

Two members of the UWI Vice Chancellor’s Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (UWI STAT) programme have gone to the Cayman Islands from November 15-19, 2010 as part of the UWI STAT mission to promote regional issues and integration and to highlight UWI as the institution of choice.
The two UWI STAT Ambassadors selected are Korey Rowe, a Management Student at Mona and Siobhan Tuitt, and a Montserrat national studying at the Mona. During their visit they will pay visits to several of the secondary schools to motivate students to strive for academic excellence, meet with UWI alumni, the UWI Open Campus Student Guild, and to pay their courtesy calls on several Government officials.
World Bank Public Lecture Held at UWI, Mona

“The Caribbean Region - Opportunities for All in Challenging Times” is the title of the World Bank public lecture hosted by UWI, Mona on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 6 pm at the Council Room, UWI, Mona. Pamela Cox, World Bank Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean will deliver the Lecture.
The presentation will focus on the challenges to growth in the Caribbean with specific emphasis on Jamaica in the context of the current economic recession. It will also briefly explore the opportunities to be found in addressing some key challenges including debt, climate change and crime and violence.
The university community and the public are invited to attend.
Brazil Film Screening

The UWI Brazilian Club at Mona presents a film screening of Edificio Master, directed by Eduardo Coutinho on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 2 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. This documentary explores the private lives of twenty-seven (27) residents in the big city apartments in Copacabana as a last stronghold of individuality, and how living in a common place does not ensure that a community will be formed.

UWI, Mona Western Jamaica Campus Public Relations Class Stage Career Expo

“Create. Innovate. Elevate” is the theme of the career expo being hosted by the 2011 Cohort of Public Relations students at the UWI, Mona Western Jamaica Campus. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Orville Taylor, UWI, Mona Lecturer, Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work and Host, Hotline on RJR 94 FM. The Expo takes place on Thursday, November 25, 2010 at 10 am at the UWI, Mona-Western Jamaica Campus Multi Purpose Court and Pavilion.
The Expo will feature presentations from communication practitioners and displays on the various career opportunities in the field. Presentations will also be made highlighting career opportunities in the following: Digital Media Production, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism and Studio Engineering.
UWI Professor Delivers Lecture titled, “The Value of the Moravian Church Archives at Spanish Town”

UWI Professor Emerita Maureen Warner-Lewis will deliver the National Library of Jamaica Third Distinguished Lecture on Thursday November 25, 2010 at 2:30 pm at Institute of Jamaica’s Lecture Hall. Her lecture is entitled, “The Value of the Moravian Church Archives at Spanish Town.”
The Lecture draws from experiences described in Professor Warner-Lewis’ book Archibald Monteath Igbo, Jamaican, Moravian.” The book is the record of an Igbo child who was brought to Jamaica around 1820 and sold into slavery. In his adult years he learnt to read and became very active in the Moravian Church. His personal journals along with records from the church are the major source documents for this book.
Impact of Tropical Storm Nicole

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute, Department of Geography and Geology at UWI, Mona and the Water Resources Authority will host a public forum on the topic, the Impact of Tropical Storm Nicole. The forum takes place on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 2 pm at the Physiology Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
The event will feature presentations from The Water Resources Authority and Mona GeoInformatics in addition to a panel discussion. The panelists are: Dr. Barbara Carby, Head, Disaster Risk Reduction Centre, UWI, Mr. Ronald Jackson, Director-General, ODPEM, Mrs. Sylvia McGill, Director, Meteorological Office, Mr. Basil Fernandez, Director, Water Resources Authority, Mr. Patrick Rose, Director, National Works Agency and Mr. Philbert Brown, CEO, Department of Local Government.
19th Annual Medical Sciences Conference Explores Infectious Diseases

“Infectious Diseases: Old Foes, New Enemies, And Future Threats” is the theme of the 19th annual Faculty of Medical Sciences Research Conference scheduled to take place on November 10-12, 2010. The Conference begins with an Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 5:30 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre during which the Distinguished Kenneth Standard Lecture will be delivered. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Ian Poxton, Professor of Medical Microbiology, University of Edinburgh.
