Reggae Artiste, Vybz Kartel Featured at Public Forum at UWI, Mona

The Department of Literatures in English and the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) Mona Unit UWI, Mona are co-hosting a public forum in which Adidja ‘Vybz KarteI’ Palmer will deliver the main presentation. The event takes place on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. Kartel’s presentation is entitled, “‘Pretty as a Colouring Book’: My Life and My Art.”
His presentation will provide an opportunity for the UWI to demonstrate its leadership role in engaging public debate on issues of colour, class and gender as manifested in Jamaican popular music. Kartel, who thrives on controversy, is expected to deliver a provocative talk on skin bleaching.
Book Launch: The Devil in the Details

“The Devil in the Details: Cuban Antislavery Narrative In the Postmodern Age” is the title of the book being launched by Professor Claudette Williams, Professor of Hispanic Caribbean Studies and Head, Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI, Mona. The book launch takes place on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 6 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. The guest speaker on this ocassion will be Dr. Conrad James, UWI graduate and Senior Lecturer in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Department of Hispanic Studies, University of Birmingham.
Public Lecture at UWI, Mona Marks 2011 International Women’s Day Celebrations

“Education and Training: Decent Work for Women” is the title of the public lecture being delivered by Mrs. Maxine Henry-Wilson, former Minister of Education and Youth. The topic of the Lecture is in keeping with the focus designated by the United Nations for 2011, Equal Access to Education, Training and Science and Technology: Pathway to Decent Work for Women. The Lecture takes place on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 12 noon at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. The event marks the centenary celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8 and is organized by the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit.
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
UWI Sports Day

The University of the West Indies, Mona presents Sports Day and Extravaganza on Thursday, March 3 starting at 9 am at the UWI/ Usain Bolt Regupol Track, Mona Bowl. The Day’s activities features 100 m, 200m, 400m 800m and other track and field events in addition to special cheerleading competitions, Guild, Staff and Alumni races.
The Day’s event will include booth displays where sporting associations, sporting organizations and other corporations will offer samples and prizes to patrons. The event will culminate with an “After Party.” All staff and students are invited to attend especially as no classes will be held to facilitate full participation.

UWI, Mona Climate Talks Continue

“On the trail of greenhouse gases - the changing role of the ocean in the climate system” is the title of the Climate Talk lecture set for Wednesday, March 2, 5:30 pm at the Physic Lecture Room B, UWI, Mona. Professor Leif G. Anderson, Professor of Marine Chemistry at University of Gothenburg, Sweden will deliver the Lecture.
During the Lecture he will explore discrepancy between air-sea exchange of carbon dioxide and oceanic uptake and the resulting impact such as increase water temperatures, coastal erosion and flooding.
The Lecture is a part of the Climate Talk Series organized by the University of the West Indies, Mona to increase awareness of issues related to the impact of climate change.

Public Forum: African Heritage and Natural Beauty

Recording Reggae artiste Tarrus Riley joins the public forum discussion at UWI, Mona on Monday, February 28, 2011 at 7 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1). The public Forum is entitled, Shakazulu Pickney: Reflecting on our African Heritage and our Natural Beauty. The public Forum features, Mutabaruka, journalist and dub poet and Umar Abdullah Johnson, former Minister of Education for the Universal Negro Association.

UWI, Mona Hosts Developers Conference

The Mona School of Business at UWI hosts the first Slashroots (./roots 2011) Developers' Conference designed to foster and encourage the development of local technological innovations and provide an environment to support dialogue among stakeholders of innovations particularly members of the technology community, public and private sector interests and policy makers. The Conference takes place on February 24-25, 2011 at the Multifunctional Room at the Faculty of Law, UWI, Mona.
Kenneth Ingram Lecture

The UWI, Mona and the National Library of Jamaica will host the second Kenneth Ingram Memorial Lecture on Thursday, March 03, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. Professor Margaret Rouse-Jones, Historian, Caribbean scholar and former University Librarian (1981-2008) will deliver a lecture entitled, History at the personal level: Tesserae in the Mosaic of Caribbean Social History.

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work will host a public forum entitled, From Lye to Cake Soap: Addressing Skin Bleaching in the Dancehall and Beyond. Dr. Imani Tafari-Ama, author of the book, Blood Bullets and Bodies and Ms. Annie Paul, Senior Publications Officer, Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, Mona will make the address on this occasion. The Forum takes place on Friday, February 25, 2011 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Room (N4).
