Book Launch- The Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry, UWI, Mona: The Early Years is the title of the book being launched by the Department of Chemistry and the Society of Alumni and Friends of the Chemistry Department on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the Founders’ Park at UWI, Mona. The book authoured by Professor Robert Lancashire and Professor Ken Magnus tells of the early years of the Department of Chemistry and shares interesting history of the Department and its accomplishments over the decades.
Haitian Libraries and Archives Seminar

The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts a presentation on the University's Assistance Programme to Haitian Libraries and Archives following the January 12 Earthquake as part of the UWI, Mona-Haiti Initiative. The presentation takes place on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 3:30 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI.
UWI, Mona-Western Jamaica Campus Hosts Carol Service

The University of the West Indies, Mona–Western Jamaica Campus will host the Festival of the Nine Lessons with Carols on Sunday, December 5, 2010 at 4:30 pm at the St. James Parish Church, St. Claver Street in Montego Bay. The University Singers will perform.

UWI, Mona Hosts Public Lecture to Mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

“Building Partnerships to Eliminate Gender Based Violence” is the title of the public lecture organized by the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at UWI, Mona. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Novelette Grant, Head, Strategic Review Implementation Team (SRIT), JCF will deliver the public lecture. The public lecture is being held on Thursday, November 25, 2010 at 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The presentation of the Dorian Powell Prize 2009/10 will also be made on this occasion. The prize is made to an outstanding student pursuing a major or minor in Gender and Development at UWI,Mona.

UWI, Mona Partners With First Global to Host Blood Drive

The University of the West Indies, Mona partners with First Global Bank Limited to host a Blood Drive on November 24-25, 2010 between 9 am and 6 pm daily at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. The Blood Drive is a part of the organizers effort to encourage blood donation as a habit. The UWI is also a major corporate blood donor.
The university community and the public are encouraged to give a hand to those seriously in need of blood. For more details contact the UWI Health Centre at 970-0017.
Black Op: Raising Barry Chevannes Higher- A Tribute to Professor Chevannes

The University of the West Indies, Mona invites members of the university community and the wider public to attend an evening of tributes and cultural items in celebration of the life of the late Professor Emeritus Alston “Barry” Chevannes to be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 5:30 pm. in the Oriental Gardens, next to the Mona Visitors’ Lodge on the Campus.
Haitian Students Host Exhibition to Mark the Anniversary of the Final Battle of the Haitian Revolution

An exhibition dubbed The Celebration of Haiti takes place on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 2:15 pm at N4 in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona. The Exhibition marks The Battle of Vertieres that is the final Battle of the Haitian Revolution on November 18, 1803. The Exhibition is being organized by the Haitian Association at UWI, Mona which consists of a group of twenty-five students of the State University of Haiti who are completing the final year of their degree programme at the Mona Campus as part of the UWI/ Haiti Initiative.
UWI, Mona Hosts an Evening of Tribute in Honour of Professor Chevannes

The UWI, Mona will also host an evening of tributes and cultural items for Professor Alston “Barry” Chevannes in the Oriental Gardens, next to the Mona Visitors’ Lodge on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 5:30 pm. Persons interested in delivering tributes should contact Mr. Michael Holgate, Acting Head, Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, in order that they may be scheduled on the programme.

Colombian President Visits UWI, Mona

The President of Colombia, Dr. Juan Manuel Santos Calderon visits the UWI, Mona Campus on Friday, November 19, 2010 at 2 pm while in Jamaica for an official visit. He will deliver a public address at the Assembly Hall during his visit on the topic "Latin America and the Caribbean in the Next Decade".
Members of the university community are invited to attend. High schools students and the public are also invited.
Defending Champions UWI, Mona Competes in 19th Florida Netball Tournament

Nine members of the UWI Revolution Netball team and Coach, Conrad Parks will head to the 19th staging of the Florida Netball Tournament to defend their title as champions on November 20-21, 2010 in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale. The contingent which consists of Caneta Brown, Alesha Davis, Sherona Forrester, La Teka Lynch, Janeel McDonald, Zalika Paul, Oberon Pitterson, Alicia Williams and Trishell Williams along with Coach Parks will leave the island on Friday, November 19. This is the Team’s fifth year participating in the Tournament with overwhelming success having only lost once in 2008. The Team is also expected to compete in the beach tournament which is normally held at the end of the regular Tournament.
