Ben Crichlow Memorial Bursary
Mr. Orville Williams, medical student class of 2004 has been awarded the Ben Crichlow Memorial Bursary for 2003. Mr. Williams received a cheque for US$1,500.00 (One Thousand Five Hundred US Dollars). Dr. Eric Choo Kang, Class of ’68, presented the cheque to Mr. Williams.
Commemoration Celebrations
The UWI, Mona Campus is once again organising celebrations to commemorate the founding of the Institution. The celebrations will be more extensive this year, as the UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Branch) has agreed to link its Alumni Week to the commemoration events. The celebrations will therefore take place over the period Friday, February 13 to Saturday, February 21. As usual, the celebrations will be dedicated to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Institution. For 2004, the honoree will be the Vice Chancellor, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford.
Distinguished Biographer visits Jamaica
Dr. E. Geiser, a Biogeographer from Salzburg (Austria) will be visiting the University of the West Indies, Mona, as a guest of the Electron Microscopy Unit and the Department of Life Sciences. The first of her two presentations is part of the seminar series of the Natural History Society of Jamaica. The title is “Why is Damage to Forests a greater threat to Species Diversity in Tropical Regions compared to Central Europe”. This takes place on February 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the Petroleum Corporation Auditorium, 36 Trafalgar Road, New Kingston.
Trade Policy Course for Government Officials
The UWI Mona, and the World Trade Organization’s, Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, will conduct a Trade Policy Course for government officials of the English speaking Caribbean during the period February 2 to April 23, 2004. The three-month course is designed to help address the evolving needs of countries in the Caribbean region for trade related technical assistance and capacity building.
UWI Medical Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter
The UWI Medical Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter will hold its Annual General Meeting and “After Six Mix” on Saturday, February 7, 2004. The meeting will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the social will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The venue is the Students’ Union on the Mona Campus. Members of the Association are invited to bring a colleague, come to the meeting, stay for the social and meet current students.
16th Annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference
“Nurses Challenging Health Issues Through Research” is the theme of the 16th Annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day being organised by the Department of Advanced Nursing Education, University of the West Indies (UWI) at the Hilton Kingston Hotel, May 13 & 14, 2004. The highlight of this conference will be the launch of the Mary Seivwright Distinguished Nursing Research Lecture by Dr. Carol Baxter, Professor of Nursing at the School of Health and Social Sciences and Head of the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research and Development, Middlesex University.
Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean
The Opening Ceremony for the Twelfth Regional Course on “Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean” will take place on Wednesday, January 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the Action Ageing Classroom, MPH Building, Department of Community Health & Psychiatry, UWI. Speakers will include: Dr. Knox Hagley, Chairman, Action Ageing Jamaica and Professor Brendan Bain, Head, Department of Community Health & Psychiatry.
Condolences
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has learned with regret of the passing of the Mrs. Norma McKenzie, retired Administrative Technologist, of the Department of Microbiology on January 8, 2004. Mrs. McKenzie served the Department of Microbiology for Forty Two years. She joined the staff of that Department in 1951 moving up the ranks to become Chief Medical Technologist from 1968-1973 and Administrative Technologist from 1973 – 1993. She was also the recipient of a Mona Campus 40 Years Long Service Award in December 1992.
Geological Society of Jamaica
The Annual General Meeting of the Geological Society of Jamaica will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Interfaculty Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona, beginning at 9:00 a.m. At this meeting, annual reports for 2003 will be presented and a new Council will be elected. The special guest speaker for this event will be Dr. Margaret Wiggins-Grandison, Research Fellow, Earthquake Unit at UWI. The title of her presentation will be "Advances in Jamaican Seismology."
