International Student Exchange Programme 2004
The Admissions Section, University of the West Indies is inviting UWI students to participate in The University’s International Student Exchange Programme 2004. Students will study overseas, interact with other cultures for a semester or two and develop an international resume. Students selected must pay tuition fees at UWI and pay accommodation and other fees at the host university. Students may be eligible for a CUSAC scholarship or the Millennium Project Award. La Gente De La Universal
The Latin American - Caribbean Centre, UWI, Mona, in collaboration with the Embassy of Colombia in Jamaica is inviting members of the Campus community and the public to the second presentation in its Colombian Film Cycle. The film is titled La Gente De La Universal and is directed by Felipe Aljure. The screening takes place on Thursday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education. Admission is free and the film is in Spanish.
Lymelight
Myrna Hague, arguably Jamaica’s best and most accomplished jazz singer, will perform at “Lymelight” on Tuesday, January 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. “Lymelight”, the Centre’s annual fundraising concert, presented in association with its affiliated Student Societies, is a single staging show aimed at offsetting the cost of the theatre’s new Lighting Board. NEPA Partners with Environmental Law Society
In an effort to determine the effectiveness of environmental laws in Jamaica, the Environmental Law Society, Norman Manley Law School, in collaboration with the National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA will stage a one-day expo at the Norman Manley Law School, on Monday, January 26 starting at 8:00 a.m. Highlights of the day include a panel discussion and an exhibition.
Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts
The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI will host several courses beginning in February. The courses are Nail Technology, Basic Floral Arrangement, Interior Decorating, Yoga, Creative Writing, Advanced Floral Arrangement, Voice and Speech Training and Introduction to Sign Language. Policy Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation
The Mona Campus will also host a Policy Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation from January 28 to 30 as part of Research Day activities. The conference’s objectives include developing a sound intellectual framework for understanding and dealing with the challenges facing the Caribbean in its efforts to use science, technology and innovation to improve the standard of living. It also aims to develop policy mechanisms for learning and taking advantage of science, technology and the innovation process.
Research Day
The UWI Mona Campus will again host Research Day from January 29 to 30, 2004. The guest speaker at the opening ceremony which takes place at 10:00 a.m. on January 29, is Dr. the Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada. The opening ceremony will take place at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. During the two days members of the public and the Campus community will be able to see an exhibition of research activities being carried out by various departments at UWI, Mona.
Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter
The first General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter will be held on January 22, 2004 in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5, UWI, Mona, beginning at 2.30 p.m. All members and interested persons are invited to attend. Persons who have been nominated for membership may pay their dues at the meeting and interested persons may apply for membership. Items on the agenda include nominations to the executive and discussions on the structure of the Jamaica Chapter.
Fulbright Scholar for New CARIMAC Masters Programme
Dan Berkowitz, Associate, Professor of Journalism in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will spend three weeks in February helping to launch a new graduate programme in communications at UWI Mona funded by a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant. Dr. Berkowitz will travel to CARIMAC, where former University of Iowa graduate Dr. Nancy Muturi is coordinating a new master's degree programme in Communications for Social and Behavioural Change. Dr.
