Research Day

The UWI Mona Campus will again host Research Day from January 29 to 30, 2004. The guest speaker at the opening ceremony which takes place at 10:00 a.m. on January 29, is Dr. the Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada. The opening ceremony will take place at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. During the two days members of the public will be able to see an exhibition of research activities being carried out by various departments at UWI, Mona.

The University Health Centre Closure

The UWI Health Centre will close at 4:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. until Friday January 16, 2004. The Health Centre will revert to the normal closing time of 7:30 p.m. as of Monday January 19, 2004. Any inconvenience caused by this change is sincerely regretted.

Third Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium

The Section of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Mona will host its Third Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium on February 6 and 7, 2004. Guest speaker at the opening ceremony will be Dr. Parul Jayaker, a specialist in genetics and disorders of metabolism from the Miami Children’s Hospital. The Audit will take place on Friday, February 6 in the morning while skills workshops are planned for the afternoon. These workshops are suitable for trainees, doctors and nurses.

Trade Policy Course for Government Officials

The UWI Mona, and the World Trade Organization’s, Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, will conduct a Trade Policy Course for government officials of the English speaking Caribbean during the period February 2 to April 23, 2004. The three-month course is designed to help address the evolving needs of countries in the Caribbean region for trade related technical assistance and capacity building.

Bachelor in Education Secondary (Distance) Programme.

The Faculty of Humanities and Education at UWI Mona is inviting eligible teachers in Secondary schools to apply for admission to the Bachelor in Education Secondary (Distance) Programme. This programme is funded by the Ministry of Education Youth and Culture and is a four-year, part-time, distance teaching programme focusing on ten disciplines. These are Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Computer Science, English Language and Literature, as well as French and Spanish.

Caribbean Childhoods Journal

The first issue of the journal, Caribbean Childhoods is now available in the UWI Bookshop. Caribbean Childhood: From Research to Action is an annual peer-reviewed publication coordinated by the Children’s Issues Coalition at UWI, Mona. Its objectives include bringing together research concerning Caribbean children and facilitating dissemination to persons working with children, policy makers and the wider community. This first volume focuses on early childhood issues.

Chancellor Installed at Cave Hill Ceremony

Sir George Alleyne was installed as Chancellor of the UWI at a ceremony on Saturday, December 13 in Barbados. Sir George is a distinguished Barbadian born scholar and former Director of the Pan American Health Organisation. He was selected by Council earlier this year to replace Sir Shridath Ramphal who retired as Chancellor. It is the first time in the 50 year history of the UWI that the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor are both graduates of the Institution and both from the Faculty of Medicine.

CUPIDE Online Survey

The UWI/UNESCO Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education, CUIPIDE, is now conducting an online survey among University personnel. The survey is designed to gather information regarding staff’s technology & distance/online education skills and their general distance/online education plans and activities. CUPIDE is a collaborative project among five Universities: The UWI; University of Technology, Jamaica; University of Guyana; the University of Suriname, and University Quisqueya, (Haiti).

Exhibition Celebrating the Installation of New Chancellor

A small exhibition celebrating the installation of the new Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne is currently mounted in the Catalogue Hall of the Main Library. It highlights the procedure for his appointment, the criteria for selection, as well as his role as Chancellor. Also included are the Chancellor’s curriculum vitae, list of publications and selected books and articles. The exhibition will run until Saturday, January 12, 2003.

ICENS Research Project

The International Centre for Environment and Nuclear Sciences at UWI, Mona has received funding of just under $6 million to carry out a 24 month research project. The funding is in the form of a grant from the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica. The project is designed to measure the effects of heavy metals on agriculture and health in Jamaica. It will identify the geographical distribution of cadmium and other toxic elements in soil and food. It will also help scientists to understand the factors which control the uptake of cadmium in foods, especially yam and leafy vegetables.
