Commemoration Celebrations

The UWI, Mona Campus is once again organising celebrations to commemorate the founding of the Institution and is also observing Alumni Week. The celebrations continue this week with the inaugural Graduate Students’ Conference, to be held at Mona from February 19 to 20. The conference has been organized by the UWI Mona Association of Postgraduate Students and the School for Graduate Studies and Research, in collaboration with the Research Consortium. The theme of the Conference is “Graduate Studies and Research: Imperatives for Regional Growth and Development”.

Office of Placement and Career Services’ Career Month

The Office of Placement and Career Services is reminding finalizing students about the Mock Interviews to be held on Friday, February 20, 2004 in the Assembly Hall, which have been organized as part of Career Month activities. On Thursday, February 26 there will be a Career Symposium with theme, The University of the West Indies – Shaping the Future of our Human Resources. The symposium takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. The annual Career Expo will take place on Thursday, March 4 beginning with the opening ceremony at 11:00 a.m.

Professor Trevor Munroe

Dr. Trevor Munroe, Professor of Government and Politics at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, recently returned to the island after making a presentation on corruption and anti-corruption measures in Jamaica to a World Bank staff retreat in Washington. Professor Munroe had been invited by the Bank to participate in the annual week-long retreat of the Bank’s Public Sector Management specialists in the Latin American and Caribbean department.

Public Forum on Haiti

As part of its plans to commemorate the Haitian bicentenary, the Department of History and Archaeology at UWI Mona will be hosting a public forum/panel discussion on Friday, February 20 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The venue is the Main Library's Multifunctional Room and the theme is Haiti: the Challenge of Freedom. The objective of the panel is to address general issues and concerns related to the history of Haiti since 1804 in an interactive forum with members of the public. The panelists include Prof. Verene Shepherd who will chair the discussion, Dr. Matthew Smith and Prof.

Rawle Gibbons for 11th Philip Sherlock Lecture

The 11th Annual Philip Sherlock Distinguished Lecture will be presented on Thursday, February 26 at 5:30 p.m. by renowned Trinidadian theatre artiste, Rawle Gibbons. The lecture is the highlight of the Philip Sherlock Centre’s 36th Anniversary Celebrations, presented this year in honour of Prof. Errol Hill, The University’s first Staff Tutor in Drama. Professor Hill is perhaps best known for his promotion of Carnival Theatre, an area in which Gibbons has continued to do significant work. This year's lecture will focus on sources of contemporary Caribbean theatre practice.

Reggae Studies Unit - "The Art of the Clash”

The Reggae Studies Unit will host a public forum on The Art of the Clash: From Africa to the Caribbean on Tuesday, February 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. Confirmed speakers include Professor Maureen Warner-Lewis (a Trinidadian authority on African oral performance traditions), Mutabaruka, Cecil Gutzmore, Dimario McDowell, Ninjaman and Vybz Kartel. It is anticipated that some of the old-school DJs will also participate. The UWI community and the public are invited to attend.

Seminar for Principals and Guidance Counsellors

The University of the West Indies will be hosting a Seminar for Principals and Guidance Counsellors of Secondary Schools on Thursday, February 22 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The seminar is being held under the theme “Helping your Students Optimise the UWI Experience” and has been organised by the Office of Student Financing at Mona. There will be presentations by the Minister of Education, the Hon. Maxine Henry Wilson and Executive Director of the Students Loan Bureau, Mrs. Lenice Barnett.

UWI Bookshop Book Signing

The University of the West Indies Bookshop, Mona Campus in association with Arawak Publications will host the Book Signing of Jamaica, the Aviation Story on Thursday, February 18 from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the UWI Bookshop.

Awards Ceremony

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus held an Awards Ceremony last Friday to recognize outstanding researchers at Mona. Organised by the Office of the Principal, the ceremony served to end the annual Research Day activities on a high note. In the Faculty of Humanities and Education Awards for Best Publications went to Professor Maureen Warner-Lewis of the Department of Literatures in English for her book, Central Africa in the Caribbean: Transcending Time, Transforming Cultures; and to Dr.
